Did you hear? There’s a new online poker site for non-U.S. citizens playing in legal jurisdictions worldwide. We introduce you to www.ppipoker.net, ‘where players rule.’ Yesterday, we spoke to Randall Kasper, co-founder of Poker Players International, about the company’s latest gaming venture, a new online poker site called PPI Poker. “The time is right for our brand,” he says.

Randall Kasper, PPI

We have interviewed Kasper, and two of his companies poker ‘ambassadors’ Casey ‘Big Dog’ Jarzabek & Danny(N13) Noseworthy, both epic online players with millions in tournament earnings. For all three interviews visit HERE

Have you ever used a HUD? Heads-up displays are becoming the norm on poker sites around the world. In 2016, we spoke to Ivar Ketilsson, a community manager at Jivaro, about his companies new technology:

Plus, we also dug a tremendous interview out of our audio archive. We were saddened to learn that one of our very first guests, Johnny Hughes, author of three books, including Famous Gamblers, Poker History & Texas Stories, passed away back in November. Hughes was a PhD, road gambler, expert ‘Bird Dog’ (a guy who catches cheats, poker player & author and was a treasure to have on the show. You like old time gambling? You a poker junkie? You will absolutely LOVE this discussion. The audio is not the best, from 2012 and by phone, but the content is stellar. RIP Johnny!

Also…the NFL playoffs are underway…are you a sports fan who wagers on games? Here’s a few clips from Brian Tuohy, author of The Fix Is In & the world’s leading sports conspiracy theorist, on how professional sports can be fixed!

We also have a clip here from 2007 WSOP ‘Player of the Year’ Tom Schneider, who’s won 4 bracelets at the World Series of Poker and is one of the best players on the planet. He talks about that year, ’07, and running good:

Plus…it’s a $1,000 poker book…but “it’s not for everybody,” says Reid Young of www.pokersrpout.com, a professional poker player who is so good he skipped medical school because he was making too much money:

Also, Roy Cooke, poker pro, author & columnist for Card Player magazine, talks about his lengthy career in poker. Did you know he’s been beating the game for more than 40 years, and still going strong. The licensed Las Vegas real estate agent, www.roycookepokerlv.com, talks about the impact of Chris Moneymaker’s win in 2003, Johnny Moss and how grumpy he was, Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson and other legends, plus his long running column at Card Player and his 7 books.

AKA ‘nuTTTz’, Al McDonald is the newest member of Team High Roller.

Hey High Rollers, we’d like to introduce the newest member of Team High Roller Radio. Al McDonald, an avid gamer, poker player & Twitch poker moderator for ‘Gripsed’ & ‘Upswing Poker’. AKA ‘nuTTTz’. Al has a strong technical background and here talks about a gambling nightmare; you’re leading an MTT poker tournament and the power goes out. Help!!!!

Costly Crash Late in an MTT?

By: Al McDonald

It’s just past the 10PM, 5-minute online tournament break. Six hours into what you hope to be a twelve-or fourteen-hour session, you are feeling relaxed. Thinking back to the countless hours of study, the thousands and thousands of hands you played in order to give yourself a real chance to be profitable in online poker, your confidence is high.Seeing the thousands of dollars up for grabs in the top places feeds you energy. The mental game training kicks in, ensuring you stay on track. You continue making good decisions. You’ve got this bad boy! No-one is as prepared as you are to win. Every read is right. The hero calls are paying off. It is all going just as you planned. You hear the sound of a distant “POP!” and suddenly it is dark. A few seconds go by before you start to fully understand the gravity of the situation.
“I am deep in three, 6-figure-prize-pool tournaments and my computer and internet are off! What the hell do I do now? HELP!”

It only takes a few seconds longer to realize that the little generator on your bicycle front tire is not going to save the day. You are well and truly at the mercy of events and circumstances that are out of your control. But are you really? Could you have protected yourself? Yes. Absolutely, most certainly, yes! Taking into account the stakes at play, at some point it becomes necessary to make serious investment in technical variance reduction.

Avoid internet and power outages late in MTT poker tournament!

Avoid internet and power outages late in MTT poker tournament!

The first part of it, like anything, is knowing all the variables. In the case of technical variance, it is a short list of three things:

    1. Hardware failure

    2. Power outage

    3. Internet outage

Hardware Failure

This can be due to any one of a hundred different reasons, some preventable, others not.

The most obvious factor is to buy a quality system that is up to the task. Going cheap here is like trying to race INDY in your family sedan. Make sure you get system that can handle the heaviest load you wish to put on it and then some. When buying a system, consider maxing out the RAM and upgrading to an SSD drive to improve both performance and reliability.

Regular system maintenance can go a long way towards keeping a system running at peak efficiency. (I’ll get back to that later.) Even the best due diligence on housecleaning, however, will not stop hardware from eventually failing. The key to insuring against losses due to failure is redundancy, even if that means something as simple as a backup laptop capable of running the software load you require. Are you a smartphone/tablet user? Consider having your sites’ apps installed in case of emergency.

Some users, many top Twitch streamers, for example, will put a very large investment into redundant hardware that is capable getting them back on-screen very quickly. Four-monitor setups with dual gaming PCs create the ability for one PC to take over should the other fail. This enables the session to be finished with only a slight interruption. The issue of the failure can then be addressed later when your tournament life isn’t at stake.

Whenever a hardware failure takes your system down, it will almost never be a quick fix.
Repairs shouldn’t be attempted if also trying to play serious poker. Things such as replacing video cards or restoring data to a new hard drive are quite often day-long adventures.

Backup devices to login with are your best insurance against loss due to hardware failure.

Power Outages

When you have all the right equipment in place, this is one of the least troublesome issues you’ll face.

While dealing with power outages is relatively easy, it will not be cheap to do right.
Take into account what relevant factors apply to you and determine just how much you need to invest in protection. Things to consider are: location, type of residence, service consistency (outages and fluctuations), expected power consumption, runtime and budget.

Dependant upon what type of dwelling you reside in, your options can be different. Home owners have one option others will not: an external, automatic switch-over, backup generator. While an expensive option costing several thousand dollars or more when combined with basic battery backup devices on modems and computers, it provides seamless uninterrupted power. Natural gas may also be an option that ensures your off-the-grid power never runs out of fuel.

When renting or living in a place where an exterior generator is not an option, battery backup is your only option. Also called a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), these range from inexpensive units that provide mere minutes of power to serious boxes that can provide many hours of backup power. The greater the wattage and longer the power duration possible, the greater the price of entry.

Service consistency will often go hand in hand with location. Rural residents, who may have to contend with things like trees falling on power lines, will naturally be coupled with more frequent outages and longer downtimes. When an external generator is not an option and downtimes will be longer than most, getting proper backup power will be expensive.

How many devices you wish to run on emergency power is a critical consideration. Runtime costs money. Expect any battery backup that will provide power to multiple devices for an hour or more to start at the four figure price range. For multiple monitors, PCs, modems etc, expecting to last for several hours can easily land you in five-figure territory.

Depending on the stakes involved, you may potentially lose more with an outage than a solid battery backup system would have cost. Backup solutions are your poker insurance policy against losses.

Internet Outage

Our modern age worst nightmare. More angry calls have been made because people have email they can’t get than any other reason in telephone history. As a Twitch streamer, a lost internet connection is a show stopper. As a stakes player, it can make you lose your mind and your chance of winning. This is where it gets all ‘good news, bad news’.

For most, the good news is that insurance is fairly easy to obtain. Salvation lay in cell phone service. Urban areas and many rural areas have full data and internet coverage as part of the cell service. Consisting of nothing more than a 4G- or 3G USB dongle and a service agreement, this option is the fastest way back to the interwebs should your main provider suffer a major outage. Switching to a mobile device for play can be an option here as well. Unfortunately, most mobile devices do not support multi-tabling. As such, a 4G dongle on a monthly contract can be a very worthwhile investment.

The bad news: If alternate cell service or a backup internet provider are not options, you are screwed. Blinding out. GG, us. Thank you for playing. Go pour yourself some of your favourite beverage and try to not toss your monitors against the wall. Breaking stuff is -EV.

To this point, we have discussed those things that are random and unpredictable. From here we will go into the preventable.

System Maintenance and Due Diligence

The software on your computer is 1000 times more complicated than the hardware it runs on.
Left to its own devices, the software will, for lack of a more fitting description, over time go insane. Not a little loopy, either; completely batshit crazy. A machine exposed to the internet is at even more risk. Exposure to the internet creates a ‘not if, but when’ certainty for trouble.

Maintenance items that are required for continued good performance are:

Defrag: Untangles the ones and zeroes that got mixed together during HDD use. Note: Don’t enable defragmentation on SSD devices. Windows does know better here. On mechanical HDDs, this should be run weekly during your non-grinding hours. (No defrag on Macs.)
Scandisk- Scans system for errors and drive defects. I recommend running scans on your HDDs and SSDs weekly on all critical-uptime systems. (Mac users run Disk Utility.)
Antivirus/malware scan- Up-to-date antivirus and anti-malware software is a must. Run weekly scans and have on-access, real-time scanning enabled. Running a PC on the internet without this protection is only inviting disaster.

Backup, Backup, Backup

One of the most important aspects of keeping your data intact is to have a backup. Windows and Macs offer native backup solutions that are free. Purchase a USB drive that is at least three times larger than your main HDD and schedule daily full backups of your system. In a worst-case scenario of a HDD crash or SSD failure, you can install your operating system on a fresh drive and then restore all your apps and data from last night’s backup. Don’t be That Guy who loses years of hand histories and player stats to a lack of preparation.

Conclusion

As for due diligence, it is like any insurance and maintenance.
When you assess how much is as stake for you, that is your opportunity to consider how much you are willing to invest to protect it. If a four-figure investment can prevent you from a five- or six-figure loss, you should call.
Every single time.

Be Well.
Be Prepared.

Mike Sexton Wins in Montreal, Adds His Name to List of WPT Champions!

Mike Sexton Wins WPT Montreal

Sexton Slays Montreal

Sexton Slays Montreal

Hey High Rollers, congrats to Mike Sexton, poker legend and Hall of Famer, who finally captured a title on the World Poker Tour. The WSOP bracelet winner and WSOP Tournament of Champions winner has been commentating on the live WPT broadcasts since the franchise’s first ever episode. We’ve all heard his familiar voice, giving blow-by-blow action alongside his partner in the booth Vince Van Patten, exciting millions of fans worldwide with each turn of the card. Well, at 69, he’s finally broke through on the other side of the camera, toppling a field of 648 at the Playground Poker Club in Montreal, pocketing more than $300,000 for his efforts. His name added to the star-studded list of WPT champions.

Sexton is one of poker’s household names, he spoke at Stu Ungar’s funeral, and has compiled a stellar poker career, but perhaps his finest moment was the event in La Belle Province. He entered the final table as chip leader, but had to overcome a ridiculous chip lead held by Benny Chen once heads-up. At one point, I think it was 70 big blinds for Chen to Sexton’s seven big blinds. The veteran card player, who has faced off against most of the games greats, put on a short-stack display for the ages. Small bets, small pots, a steal here, a tight fold there, Sexton managed what few chips he had left and battled his way back. With all the momentum on Chen’s side Sexton asked for a break, which was granted, and it proved to be move of great guile and wisdom. Upon return, Sexton stayed calm and collected, and fought hard over several hours and came back, to the delight of the worldwide audience on Twitch. One big pot that shifted the chip lead, and then the fatal knock-out blow, and just like that Sexton had his arms raised like the champion he is. Sure he survived a few all-ins with the worst of it, but he gave himself a chance, put himself in a position to win an closed the deal. Well done sir.

From the archives:

Is it High Roller Radio mojo? Maybe. We had Sexton on the show several months ago to talk about his new book. Did we mention he’s an author? The book is called Life’s a Gamble and its a good read. It’s a great interview too:

High Roller Radio Q&A w/ Poker Great Mike Sexton.

Did you know? Sexton was a gymnast and attended The Ohio State University, earning a degree in public recreation. He jokes that he majored in poker because he played frequently in college. Sexton has 46 cashes at the WSOP, and close to $5.5 million in earnings.  On February 15, 2006, he was recognized as the top poker ambassador at the Card Player Magazine Player of the Year Awards Gala. In 2009, he was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.

Editor’s Note: If you haven’t seen the three-handed action from the 2006 WSOP Tournament of Champions involving Sexton (who won the event), Daniel Negreanu and Mike Matusow, it is highly recommended you do so. Look for it on youtube. Sexton was brilliant.

Your ‘November Nine’ – who will take the WSOP main event?

Hey High Rollers, very excited for UFC 201 tonight from Atlanta, as Robbie Lawlor puts his title on the line against the imposing and hard hitting Tyron Woodley. Can you say SLUGFEST? Another fight to watch is Jake Ellenburger versus Matt Brown, wow! Follow us on twitter @highrollerradio for updates throughout the evening.

2016 WSOP Final Table The 'November Nine'

2016 WSOP Final Table
The ‘November Nine’

Meet Your 2016 November Nine
Cliff Josephy, known online as ‘JohnnyBaxPoker,’ has the chip lead heading into the world championship final table. November Niners, representing five nations, will return to the Rio’s Penn & Teller theatre October 30th to play for poker bragging rights worldwide, the $8 million dollar first prize and of course that very expensive bracelet.
The main event attracted 6,737 players from around the globe. Close to seven thousand high rollers, low rollers, amateurs, pros, sharks & fish ponied up the 10-grand to play, some just to say they were there, some for the thrill of it all and many with full intention on winning. Now, just nine remain. Each has already received ninth place money of $1 million but there is still a staggering $25 million to play for.
It’s a final table featuring five nations, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Spain and the United States. Canada, Spain and the US have all produced world champions before. Belgium and the Czech Republic are hoping for their first. And, by all accounts, the media reports and the updates on WSOP.com, this seems to be one of the more talkative and animated final tables in years.
Alright, let’s meet your players…
In Seat 1, we have the short-stacked Jerry Wong, with slightly more tun 10 million. He is one of two New Yorkers at the table, Josephy being the other, he’s 34, a poker pro with 19 previous WSOP cashes, more than a million dollars in live tournament earnings and his previous biggest score, more than 700k, came in 2013 when he finished 3rd at the PCA in the Bahamas.
Seat 2, Griffin Benger, a previous guest of the show and our favourite to win, despite being 7th in chips with 26 million. Benger, of course, a Canadian who does play-by-play for the newly formed Global Poker League. He’s a bonafied big league poker star, $2.4 million in lifetime live tourneys, more than $5 million won online under the banner of ‘Flush_Entity,’ winner of a couple major titles, including his $1 million payday for taking down Shark Cage. This guy is good, be sure to visit www.highrollerradio.net for our dynamite chat with Griffin Benger.
On his left, Seat 3, is the Czech Republic’s Vojtech Ruzicka, who is ranked 6th in chips with 27.3 million. Good player, a professional with 17 WSOP cashes and $1.5 million won on the live circuit. The closest the Czech Republic has ever come to a poker world champ? Martin Staszko, who finished 2nd in 2011.
Beside him, Seat 4, is Fernando Pons of Palma, Spain. A guy with much work to do! He is last in chips with only 6 million. His biggest live cash before this main event? $4,000 from a limit hold’em event a few years ago. He is an account executive for a retail chain, so you have to believe he knows the numbers. Will he be the first one all-in? Will he make a push for the title? Or, will he sit back hoping to move up a few spots to pocket some more cash? We’ll see.
Qui Nguyen occupies Seat 5, second in chips with 68 million. This39 year old Vegas resident calls himself a professional gambler. Poker is not his main game, so expect those chips to be active.
Seat 6, the man to beat Cliff Josephy, a 51 year old long time professional shark and the oldest November Niner this year. Josephy has two WSOP bracelets, a 3k No Limit Hold’em title and a $1,500 Seven Card Stud title, and more than $2.6 million in live winnings. He was a main backer of 2009 world champ Joe Cada, so the main event has been very good to him. Can he cap a terrific poker career with a world championship? Can he take JohnnyBax to the max? He’s very good and he’s got the chips to play with.
Good spot to be, directly on Josephy’s left…and that’s where you’ll find Michael Ruane perched with his 31.6 million chips in Seat 7. His previous best cash? $17,000, so this is a massive payday for the New Jersey native. He is a poker pro, cash games, and you have to believe he’s riding high with a ton of confidence.
Next to him, Seat 8, San Fransisco’s Gordon Vayo with 49 million in chips. He’s 27 years old and has come close to WSOP gold, finishing 2nd in a $3,000 No Limit Hold’em event two years ago for $314k. This is his first main event cash but he’s had a great summer, 21 events, 8 cashes and, yes, this million dollar payday, how much more will it be, $7 million? We’ll see.
and in Seat 9, Kenny Hallaert, who is 4th in chips with 43 million. Will he be Belgium’s first ever World Series of Poker main event champion? He is an accomplished tournament director and player, 22 previous WSOP cashes and in last year’s Colossus, with 22,374 entries, he finished 5th, turning his 565 bucks into more than $180,000. Is he your sleeper?
October 30th play resumes to a packed and boisterous crowd at the Rio. It’s poker’s marquis event, the showcase, and the winner will forever be immortalized in poker lore. A gold bracelet, a title and bragging rights are on the line. Can’t wait!
By the way, your ‘bubble boy’ was California’s Josh Weiss who will receive a free entry into next year’s main event for his troubles.

Nevada Regulators give approval for off-strip casino

Off-Strip Casino Finally Approved!
The Nevada Gaming Commission and the Gaming Control Board have approved the public offering plan of the off-strip chain, Red Rock Resorts, the name the new company will operate under, after successful completion of its IPO. The news seems to have stirred some much needed attention in Casino Games that Station Casino has been aiming to pout in  place since the Securities and Exchange Commission approved the license.

This new venture will be headed up by the major shareholders, in brothers Frank and Lorenzo Ferttita, which own 43 per cent and have occupied two of the five seats on the Red Rock Resorts executive board ever since the company went private in 2007.

There is some opposition. The local Union of Culinary has indicated its intention to oppose the move through its research director Maya Holmes, who’s cited that the bank has manipulated the interest rate, among her many reasons for campaigning against the IPO.  This, despite talk the union has a closer link to the Deutche Bank, which is believed to be the main funder of the company.

Despite all the issues, the Station has assured regulators that is has no undue influence and the company is in good financial standing. And, the regulator have verified the claims. The massive $460 million entertainment complex acquisition went ahead as it was approved by regulators.

Hockey in Vegas?
“I just don’t see it not happening. We have a solid owner, an arena and we sold 13,000 season tickets. Vegas has 2.2 million people. It’s a sports town. We’ve been starving for a professional franchise of any kind for many years.”
– Daniel Negreanu, on Las Vegas getting an NHL team.

Poker Quotes

“The night before I left Las Vegas I walked out in the desert to look at the moon. There was a jeweled city on the horizon, spires rising in the night, but the jewels were diadems of electric and the spires were the neon of signs ten stories high.”
 Norman Mailer

“In Vegas, I got into a long argument with the man at the roulette wheel over what I considered to be an odd number.”
– Steven Wright

“In Vegas, everybody’s gotta watch everybody else. Since the players are looking to beat the casino, the dealers are watching the players. The box men are watching the dealers. The floor men are watching the box men. The pit bosses are watching the floor men. The shift bosses are watching the pit bosses. The casino manager is watching the shift bosses. I’m watching the casino manager. And the eye-in-the-sky is watching us all.”

Mike Watson Wins PCA, Super High Roller Bowl & Gambling Fun Facts

Hey High Rollers, hope all is well. NFL Play-off weekend…some crazy games so far. Did you see Green Bay v Arizona…wow, what an ending. Are you betting? If so click the banners on this page (along right side) and bet with us at Bet Online…great odds, great action, great fun. Good luck.

Sir Watts Strikes Again

We star with Canadian poker sensation Mike Watson. Can this guy play or what? He always seems to be in the mix, usually at High Roller events, and this time at the very prestigious PCA 2016 main event. ‘Sir Watts’ topped  a stacked field of 928 players to take down his 1st EPT title and $728,325. The 31 year old now has more than $9 million in lifetime earnings and boy would we love to have him on the show. What do you say Mike?

“It means a lot to win a main event with a big field and especially the PCA being one of the flagship events of the EPT, and really a premiere event in the whole poker calendar. It has special meaning to me that Steve Paul-Ambrose won it ten years ago. He was a mentor to me and that makes it extra sweet.”

Anthony Gregg finished 2nd.

Special mention to Marty McCormick of Scotland, who qualified for the PCA thru a $27 satellite on PokerStars, finished 13th or smooth g for 50k. Well done sir…and thanks for the drunken entertainment on twitch poker. We’d love to have you on  the show as well Marty.

Super High Roller Bowl

Did you know?

Writer Damon Runyon allegedly based the character Sky Masterson, the gambler-hero of The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown (on which the musical Guys and Dolls is based), on legendary gambler Titanic Thompson, who is thought to have taught all of his pro-bet, hustling tricks to Amarillo Slim.

Action Man: One of Titanic Thompson’s partners in “the hustling game” included pool player Mnnesota Fats, who considered Titanic a genius, “the greatest action man of all time”.

Pay Cut?
In an era when top pro golfers were lucky to earn $30,000 a year, Thomas (who, after a misprint in a New York newspaper, let people think his name was Thompson) could make that much in a week hustling rich country club hackers. He was once asked if he would ever turn pro? He replied, “I could not afford the cut in pay”.

A Putt for his Life?
Once, during a discussion about golf, Doyle Brunson said that if he had to pick one guy to make a 10-foot putt for his life it would be Puggy Pearson. Not Nicklaus, nor Palmer, nor Watson. Puggy Pearson!
“He’s the greatest pressure putter I’ve ever seen,” Brunson said.

November Nine Final Table – Joe McKeehan Dominates!

Hey High Rollers, did you watch the final table? Did you like it? The 2015 WSOP Main Event has concluded and it’s the 25 year old from North Wales, Pennsylvania who claims the $7.7 million first place prize, richest prize in sports, and bragging rights as poker’s new world champ. Now, he has two world titles, he also won the world Risk title in 2010.  Joshua Beckley finished 2nd, Neil Blumenfield 3rd.

Poker's New King!

Poker’s New King!

Things Learned Watching the November Nine:

  • The Italian, Frederico Butteroni, once worked on a watermelon farm in Australia.
  • Frederico Butteroni and Joshua Beckley made the final table in their first ever WSOP main event.
  • Patrick Chan was eliminated on just the 2nd hand of the final table, a November Nine record.
  • #WSOP started to trend on twitter, as did #WSOPMainEvent
  • Israeli Zvi Stern’s slow play and ‘tanking’ on night one prompted Daniel Negreanu, poker’s all-time winningest player, to take to twitter calling for rule changes i.e. shot clock.
  • The $7.7 million McKeehan won is more than Johnny Chan made after three straight WSOP main event final tables, in which two of them he won.
  • The 2015 WSOP gold bracelet is big enough to fit the two winning cards in it for posterity and is worth $250,000.
  • There were 192 million chips in play in the 2015 main event.
  • This is the 8th straight year a 20-something won the event.

Final Hand

 Ace 10 versus 44

McKeehan ran well to say the least! Played well too. It was the most dominating win since 2006 when Jamie Gold went crazy.

Shot Clock?

The November Nine saw some slow play, especially from the Israeli Zvi Stern and twister attacked. Daniel Negreanu, poker’s winningest all-time money leader and the game’s bets ambassador took to social media calling for a shot clock. WSOP TD Jack Eiffel had this to say to Card Player magazine:

“[Stern] was super cool when I talked to him about it. He was like, ‘Man, I didn’t realize I was taking too much time.’ He got it. I think sometimes players just have to be told. As officials, it’s our job to talk to guys and try to explain that to them and explain it from the other players’ perspective. The first thing that scares me when I think about the shot clock is that if you put someone on a shot clock, and everybody is on that same shot clock, then everybody is going to use that same amount of time before they act every single hand. So that guy who may have folded in five or 10 seconds are now taking 30, and that might pose a problem. I don’t know how it would play out naturally. It would need some more R and D and some trial to see whether or not it would be good.”

  • Jack Effel

“Lori Tells…”
May 26th, 2014

A Session in the Life of a Low Stakes Casino Cash Grindin’ Girl

It’s another Friday night, and I head into work. My profession is a lil’ different than most.

While most of my friends are going on dates with their significant others, putting their

children to bed or watching TV and winding down from their workdays, I have closed

up shop in the lingerie business and ready for my night shift~poker. I play 40 hours or

more a week in my local casinos in Biloxi, Mississippi, and tonight is my usual “busy”night.

As I drive in, I try to prepare my mind for the battle against mostly recreational, inebriated,

touristy players. I steel myself for the constant babble of inexperienced players that we all

endure night after night, session after session in low stakes 1-3 NL tables. For me, however,

I endure a little more than most of my poker playing friends. There’s been a lot of talk

lately about women in poker. For all the belief that the game is the same for men and women,

I am here to tell you that it is most definitely NOT the same! Just in the course of one session,

I usually am bombarded with table talk that is purely chauvinistic.

What I hear? Let me give you a few examples just from the past 40 hours of play.

Donkey:

“This is the BIG boys’ game. Are you just killing time while you wait for

your husband?”

Lori’s brain:

“Yes, you certainly ARE a big boy! That’s great! You will have the mass

behind you to ship those chips faster in my direction.”

Donkey:

“Little lady, the poker table is no place for a sweetheart like you. Let’s go

somewhere nicer and we can play strip poker.”

Lori’s brain:

“I now know why you are here at 9 pm on a Friday night. With lines like that, you

are not likely to go out on any dates.”

Donkey:

“I fold. You must have it. No offense, but, honey, women don’t know how to

bluff. You will never be able to win in the end because of that. I will never pay

you off. No chips from me, baby!”

Lori’s Brain:

“ Are these imaginary chips that I am stacking? I’ve made you fold by the turn

to the tune of about 70 bbs by my calculations, but, what do I know? I’m just

a girl.”

Donkey:

(After he reraises me when the nut flush draw that I had been betting hits)

“Honey, I hit my card, just fold. I don’t wanna take your chips.”

Lori’s Brain:

“Donkey, EVERY card is your card! Just shove on me so I can snap you off, HONEY.”

As you can see, part of my job description is learning to tune this out, master my own mind-set, and make the most +EV decisions with every deal. It’s not online where I can

just shut off the chat , and sometimes, in spite of having to listen to these ignorant players,

I am happy to be in total control of the table texture.I am in my element, and as long as I know

this and they do not, I will win. as long as I am underestimated, I have a clear advantage.

Players, the next time you see a cute little thing sitting at your table, remember:

You just may be up against a female warrior.

‘Til next time, I wish you “rungood” , loose tables and most of all +EV from the felt

in Biloxi!

Giving the Word FLUSH New Meaning

Hey High Rollers, have the patio door open enjoying the beautiful Southern California weather, and woking on the website.  Good news, two new sponsors have joined the fold and the NATION is growing, with 4 new members.  Found this interesting story on CNN this morning…a new meaning to the word – FLUSH!

<New Parlay Odds at BetOnline>

Talk about a FLUSH!

We’ve all heard the saying, “Throwing money down the drain,” One poker player gave new meaning to the saying “throwing money down the drain.” something I secretly say ager each crying call.  You been there?

Well,  Christian Lusardi, 42, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, flushed…literally flushed,  $2.7 million down the drain…2.7 million in counterfeit chips he was apparently using during the Borgata’s Winter Poker Open Big Stack No Limit Hold’em event.  Tournament officials became suspicious and found 160 fake poker chips, each worth $5000, for a stack of $800 grand…Lusardi flushed the chips down the toilet in a room at Harrah’s in Atlantic City.  Cops found them in clogged sewer pipes…the 42 year old was arrested…the tournament was suspended for 24 hours and eventually cancelled.

“A very unusual occurrence,” says Joe Lupo, senior VP of Operation at Borgata, “The first time in Borgata’s 10 years, anything like this has happened.” he adds.

Strange indeed, proving again, you just never know what you’re gonna find in the world of Gambling.
