Bye to ‘The Riv’

The Riviera has ended its 60 year run on the Las Vegas strip. City officials plan on converting the space and using it for its $2.3 billion dollar convention centre project.

Bryan Micon Charged for Operating Illegal Gaming Operation
The Nevada-based poker pro is accused by the state of running an unlicensed internet gaming platform, Seals with Clubs, misconduct that carries a potential prison term of 10 years and a five-figure fine.

“I maintain that I have committed no wrongdoing.” Micon says. He’s being represented by David Chesnoff, who’s defended well-known poker players Phil Ivey, Paul Phua and Dan Bilzerian in the past.

“Mr. Micon maintains his innocence and we’re looking forward to litigating on what appears to be a case of first impression. We are going to advise our client that he’s been charged in Las Vegas and what his legal obligations are.”
– David Chesnoff, to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Erik Seidel, Best Ever?

Erik Seidel topped a record field of 59 entries in the 2015 €100,000 buy-in EPT grand final Super High Roller event. It’s his 28th career title, good enough for more than €2.2 million. Seidel is 55, a member of the Poker Hall of Fame, and has won more than $22 million lifetime. Oh yes, he’s got 8 WSOP titles as well. High Roller baby!

Tribute

Wynn on Online Gaming

Interviewed on the Nevada political program “Ralston Reports”, billionaire casino owner Steve Wynn said he is still against real-money poker games on the internet.
“I believe that Internet gaming is not going to happen in any way that is meaningful for Las Vegas. I don’t think it has any chance of getting through the House of Representatives, and even if it did, it would at the behest, at the encouragement, of the state lottery boards who want to go into that business. I am not going to get into [online gaming]. We’ll get blamed if anything goes wrong.”

Rudy at the Poker Table?
Actor Sean Astin’s been in numerous films and been in front of the camera too many times to count, but this week in Monte Carlo the Lord of the RingsRudy, and The Goonies star has made his way to the French Riviera to play on the thrilling Shark Cage poker show.
$100 Bills NOT Allowed
The 2015 World Series of Poker will not allow $100 bills to be in play at cash game tables. The WSOP posted the announcement on twitter:
“We believe this decision best aligns our guest experience to stay up to date with evolving industry standards and ensure our operations can deliver great experiences consistently. It is important to note that this new poker cash game policy has no impact on any poker tournament we offer, as those have always been run exclusively with non-value tournament poker chips.”
Players will exchange cash at the cage or via a chip runner during the Series.

@DevoPoker Bryan Devonshire, who’s made deep runs in the WSOP main event, he’s won close to $3 million playing tournaments and now he’s thrown out the first pitch at a Colorado Rockies game, a knuckle ball for a strike, even though he’s a die hard San Fransisco Giants fan.

Tidbit: I met him at the Poker Pro Classic in Quebec and he was a class act…was actually at my table and he put me all-in with only 8 big blinds left…I had Ace Queen, on a queen high, two heart board, and I folded. He said I should have called but admitted he had KINGS and told me it was  good fold.  Says because of stack sizes the right play was to call. Live and learn.

Verbal Poker Tells

Zachary Elwood’s 2nd book explains the verbal pattern at the poker table in three points:
* Early hand talking, when the pot is small, will mostly come from players with weaker hands.
* Later hand talking from non-aggressive players (i.e., callers & checkers), will also tend to indicate weaker hands.
* Later hand talking from players making significant bets, when the pot is larger, will tend to indicate stronger hands.

Poker Quotes

“The first time I walked into Binion’s in 2003, I took one look around the room at the cast of characters and realized this job was going to be everything I’d ever dreamt of,. I swear, I asked myself, ‘Where has this been all my life?’ Then, after I watched the first show before it aired, I was so impressed at the gritty, real-life gambling feel these new producers had given it, it was just unbelievable.”

Norman Chad on living the poker dream.

German Pro Marquis Gruissem on Charity

“After I had player poker nonstop for four or five years I got the point where my motivation got lost and it got boring. I thought, ‘Why am I doing this? I have a little bit of money in the bank, but why else am I doing this?’ That sucks. So I was thinking about what to do and I decided that I should try to be an effective altruist, somebody who thinks how he can help other people most effectively. I came to the conclusion that the thing I could do best right now is playing poker, that’s my skill. So if I give a 10 percent piece of my earnings to charity, the better I play the more money I can make and the more impact I can have. So that is a big motivation for me, when playing poker isn’t always fun, I get back on track and stay motivated through that.”

Duhamel and PokerStars Part Ways

2010 world champion Jonathan Duhamel is no longer a sponsored team pro at PokerStars, the website announcing in April, 2015. The Canadian’s departure follows 2009 world champ Joe Cada being cut from the roster in 2014, and is just another in a long list of pros leaving the site. Can you say ‘Black Friday’? Since the US justice Department cracked down on online gaming in April, 2011, poker advertising dollars have vanished leading to a severe drop in poker television.

How tough are online cash gmes nowadays?

WSOP Bracelet Winner

Mike Gorodinsky WSOP Bracelet Winner

“I can only speak on hearsay since I actually haven’t played a single hand of online poker since Black Friday, but just the simple lack of action at $10-$20 and higher for the big bet games should serve as a pretty good indicator that things have dried up significantly. The reality is that the sheer volume of training content and advanced playing tools out there is going to inherently toughen up your average poker player. The losing players then wind up losing faster and the weak professionals don’t really seem to have the desire to improve their game while taking any sort of equity loss against better regulars. So the games just don’t go the way that they used to.”
– Mike Gorodinsky (Card Player magazine April 2015)

The Devilfish Passes Away at 61

The poker world has lost a true High Roller and legend of the game. Dave Ulliott passed away at the age of 61 after losing a battle with cancer. WSOP bracelet winner, WPT winner and Late Night Poker winner. We pay tribute: MORE

5 Poker Thoughts

1) Why do players blame the dealer? Come on guys and gals; I mean, your bad play or misfortune is not the dealer’s fault. Is it?
2) Why is it when you have pocket Kings an Ace always hits the flop?
3) Why do players say ‘Sorry’ when they put a Bad Beat on someone in the pot? If they were truly sorry they’d give their opponent his or her money back.
4) Why do so-called ‘good’ players openly criticize and disrespect an opponent when that player gets lucky and beats them in a pot? Good players should say, “Nice Hand,” keep their ‘fish’ happy AND at the table, knowing they’ll win in the long run. Don’t scare away the Fish folks!
5) Don’t you hate it when a smart-ass opponent says “I knew you had that!” AFTER he sees your cards.

What’s in a Name?

One of the best players on the planet, this Canadian is a double bracelet winner at the World Series of Poker, a former professional hockey player and a guy known as FBT, for Full Blown Tilt.
“A long time buddy, who’s kind of a mentor to me, gave it to me but not so much for the poker table. I’m always antsy, my head’s always spinning. You know, ‘What’s going on over here?’ or ‘Let’s go there.’ He started calling me Full Blown Tilt. It went to FBT and the rest is history. When I first started on the circuit people just knew me as FBT, they ddn’t even know I was Greg Mueller. It’s stuck with me for a long time.”

– Jack Strauss icknamed ‘Treetop’, his world championship victory in 1982 is considered to be one of the greatest comebacks in poker history. At one point, Straus had one chip remaining and somehow managed to win the title, coining the phrase “A chip and a chair”, meaning that as long as a player hasn’t been eliminated from the tournament, he or she still has a chance.

Gambling History

In the early1850’s, Portsmouth Square, the center of the City by the Bay, featured the Parker House, originally built by its owner, Robert A. Parker, as a hotel, but it was quickly converted into a casino as the gambling craze swept San Francisco. A large room downstairs contained three tables for faro, two for monte, one for roulette and a seventh for any other game desired. Professional gamblers paid $10,000 a month for the privilege of conducting their games in this room. A smaller room behind the bar went for $3,500 a month. Jack Gamble, an appropriately named sporting man, leased the entire second floor for $60,000 and outfitted all the rooms for games of chance. It was estimated that at the peak of the California Gold Rush upward of half a million dollars was stacked on the tables of the Parker House on any given day.

Is the EPT the Hardest Tour to Win On?

“To win an EPT is always something very big. These are the tournaments with the toughest fields in the world, and therefore the most difficult to win. In the aftermath of that triumph, my ambition is to win another major title to consolidate my leadership in the French poker rankings and prove to the entire poker community that I haven’t just been lucky — that Malta has not been just an episode.”

– Jean Montury, EPT Malta Winner

“I believe in poker the way I believe in the American Dream. Poker is good for you. It enriches the soul, sharpens the intellect, heals the spirit, and — when played well, nourishes the wallet.”

– Lou Krieger

Online/VLT Randomness

In slot machines and VLTs, random results are produced by a specialized computer chip called a random number generator (RNG). The RNG’s job is to cycle continuously through millions of numbers at several thousand numbers a second. When a player pushes the “spin” or “deal” button, the number that was available on the RNG at that split second is selected. Pushing the button a thousandth of a second earlier or later would result in a completely different outcome. The RNG runs continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, even when no one is playing.

Erick Lindgren is being Sued

Yes, in federal court for $2.5 million. The debt dates back to Lindgren’s days as a Full Tilt Poker sponsored player when the company. PokerStars has since acquired FTP and its assets. Most of the $2.5 million comes from FTP erroneously wiring an extra $2 million into Lindgren’s bank account, on top of the $2 million he was taking as compensation from the company. The rest comes in the form of a loan to Lindgren.

Brad Pitt Freeroll

The actor hosted a very short poker game where he gave his chauffeur, and others, a $25,000 freeroll. If Pitt lost, he would fork over $25,000 to the winner, but if he won, he could make his opponents perform a task of his choosing. Seems they were playing flips, which involves everyone being dealt two cards and then just running out the flop, turn and river without any betting.
After the hand played out, Pitt “shrugged his shoulders and mucked his hand.” His driver won. It’s believed Pitt didn’t even bother seeing if he had won.

Phil Ivey is Good, Right?

Did you know? Ivey’s top three poker tournament paydays have now all come from wins in this event, with over $7.3 million in earnings coming from his 2012, 2014 and 2015 title runs.

Poker Quotes

“It’s hard work, gambling. Playing poker. Don’t let anyone tell you different. Think about what it’s like sitting at a poker table with people whose only goal is to cut your throat, take your money and leave you out the back talking to yourself about what went wrong inside. That probably sounds harsh. But that’s the way it is at the poker table. If you don’t believe me, then you’re the lamb that’s going off to the slaughter.”

– Stu Ungar

“You can’t let it get you down when somebody knocks you out of a tournament playing a hand they shouldn’t have played. Without these types of players, nobody would win any amount of money, so sometimes you just have to take your medicine.”

– TJ Cloutier

“No Limit Hold’em. Hours of boredom followed by moments of sheer terror.”

– Tom McEvoy

Dr. Robert Chase: “Gambling doesn’t take away his pain.”
Dr. Gregory House: “It does if I win.”

– House

“I believe in poker the way I believe in the American Dream. Poker is good for you. It enriches the soul, sharpens the intellect, heals the spirit, and — when played well, nourishes the wallet.”

– Lou Krieger

“Poker is the game closest to the western conception of life, where life and thought are recognized as intimately combined, where free will prevails over philosophies of fate or of chance, where men are considered moral agents and where — at least in the short run — the important thing is not what happens but what people think happens.”

– John Luckacs

“Is it a reasonable thing, I ask you, for a grown man to run about and hit a ball? Poker’s the only game fit for a grown man. Then, your hand is against every man’s, and every man’s is against yours. Teamwork? Who ever made a fortune by teamwork? There’s only one way to make a fortune, and that’s to down the fellow who’s up against you.”

– W. Somerset Maugham

“The poker player learns that sometimes both science and common sense are wrong; that the bumblebee can fly; that, perhaps, one should never trust an expert; that there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of by those with an academic bent.”

– David Mamet

“Hold’em — like life itself — has its defining moment. It’s the flop. When you see the flop, you’re looking at 71 percent of your hand, and the cost is only a single round of betting.”

– Lou Krieger

“I’ve often thought, if I got really hungry for a good milk shake, how much would I pay for one? People will pay a hundred dollars for a bottle of wine; to me that’s not worth it. But I’m not going to say it is foolish or wrong to spend that kind of money, if that’s what you want. So if a guy wants to bet twenty or thirty thousand dollars in a poker game, that is his privilege.”

– Jack Binion

“Industry executives and analysts often mistakenly talk about strategy as if it were some kind of chess match. But in chess, you have just two opponents, each with identical resources, and with luck playing a minimal role. The real world is much more like a poker game, with multiple players trying to make the best of whatever hand fortune has dealt them. In our industry, Bill Gates owns the table until someone proves otherwise.”

– David Moschella

“A Smith & Wesson beats four aces.”

– American Proverb

“God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of his own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players [i.e., everybody], to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won’t tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.”

– Terry Pratchett and Nei Gaiham, Good Omens, 1991

“Comedy isn’t necessarily all dialogue. Think of Buster Keaton: the poker face and all this chaos going on all around him. Sometimes it’s a question of timing, of the proper rhythm.”

– Clint Eastwood

Gaming in Ontario

The Canadian online gaming market expanded in 2015 as the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation has unveiled a new online gambling site, PlayOLG.ca. It’ll feature blackjack, baccarat, roulette, slots and video poker. The site also allows users to purchase lottery tickets online. Ontarians spend about $500,000 a year on off-shore gambling sites and OLG is hoping to get its share.

* Players will have to set weekly maximum
* Can play for free
* Proceeds to support hospitals, cultural activities and non-profit corporations
Ontario, which is Canada’s most populous province, is now the seventh Canadian province of 10 that offers regulated online gambling (British Columbia, Quebec, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island).

Super Bowl Wager
In 1989, Las Vegas Casino owner Bob Stupak bet big on Super Bowl XXIII, featuring the 49’ers and the Bengals at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami. Stupak fired large, a million bucks, on San Fransisco to win. And, they did! The winning touchdown coming with 49 seconds left on the clock. Stupak had bragging rights for two reasons, as it was also, at the time, the largest bet ever made in Vegas.

The ‘Suitcase Man’
In 1980, William Lee Bergstrom became a Las Vegas legend. Known as the ‘Phantom Gambler’ and ultimately the ‘Suitcase Man’, he anonymously entered Binion’s Horseshoe Casino with $777,000 in a suitcase and placed it all on a single bet. He doubled his money instantly and left, disappearing for three years. In 1984, he reappeared in the casino and bet $1,000,000 on a single bet at a craps table. he lost! The next year, almost a full year after his million dollar bust, he committed suicide in a hotel room.

Ed Thorpe
Authored Beat the Dealer, the first book to mathematically prove, in 1962, that the house edge in blackjack could be overcome by card counting. The mathematics professor and hedge fund manager is best known for being ‘the father of the wearable computer’ in 1961.

The House Edge

NBA Ring?
The late Jerry Buss, a poker fanatic and owner of the LA Lakers, promised Johnny Chan an NBA championship ring if he could win three in a row.  Incredibly, in 1989, Chan navigated a field of 178 players to find himself heads-up with Phil Hellmuth, a 24 year old from Wisconsin.  Hellmuth won!  While Johnny Moss, Doyle Brunson and Stu Ungar have also won two world champions in a row, Chan is the last person to do it.  The Hall of Famer has won 10 bracelets, tied for seond on the all-time list with Doyle Brunson.

Six Sided Poker Dice
Poker dice are dice which, instead of having number pips, have representations of playing cards upon them. Poker dice have six sides, one each of an Ace, King, Queen, Jack, ten and nine, and are used to form a poker hand.

The ‘Brat’ a Swinger?
Phil Hellmuth has been offered a chance to appear on ABC’s “Wife Swap.” But, don’t expect him to take the network up on it…and took to Twitter to explain:
Have an offer to be on ABC television show “Wife Swap,” but wife won’t do it! Though I’m SURE she would look amazing!

Kara Scott Parts Ways With Party Poker

The Canadian pro will not rep the company in 2015 according to her blog post below:

I’d like to announce that as of the end of this year, I will no longer be an ambassador for PartyPoker or their associated brands. When I first started with the company in January 2010, I was recruited in large part for my on-camera work. Over the past five years, I’ve had the opportunity to host a variety of projects for the company, including the Premier League, the Big Game, the World Open, the European Open and the World Women’s Open. PartyPoker has gone through many changes and unfortunately as their focus shifted, there were fewer and fewer TV projects. As those shows disappeared, so did one of my favourite parts of the job and now my association with Party is ending. However, I’m not going anywhere. I still love playing poker and have made a lot of great friends in the industry. The last five years with Party were a real learning experience for me. I made incredible memories and will always be glad for the time I spent there. I wish all of my former colleagues the best and I look forward to buying them a drink the next time we bump into each other at a poker event. Although I’m no longer wearing an orange patch, you’ll still be seeing me as a sideline reporter on your TVs or sitting with a chip stack of my own in tournaments around the world. I’ve already booked a flight to Malta and reserved a seat at my favourite reggae bar there, just in time for the big poker festival in March. I love poker. Here’s to a 2015 spent pursuing projects that excite and inspire me. It’s been way too long since I jumped into the unknown and I’m both relieved and exhilarated to be doing it again. I always do my best dancing when I’m not exactly sure where to put my feet.

Poker Quotes

“I love gambling and that’s another bad financial decision I’ve made; to play cards for money. The most I’ve won in one night is $28,000 playing blackjack and when I’m in Vegas I love playing poker and I just lose my mind but not to the point where I think I’ve got a problem. I don’t get up in the middle of the night and go every day, nothing like that.”
– Macy Gray, Singer

Guys & Dolls
The Sky Masterson character is based on Titanic Thomson. Damon Runyan was a protege of Bat Masterson when they wrote for the New York Telegraph. A whore’s breakfast was a cup of coffee, a cigarette, and a copy of the Telegraph. Bat sent a young Runyan to pawn shops to buy old six guns. He’d carve notches in them and sell them as historical items used in famous gunfights.

The Big Player
Ken Uston, who wrote The Big Player exposing secrets into Team Play blackjack, beat the casinos in the courts. New Jersey ruled in his favour, stating casinos could not ban players for simply counting cards. The casinos fought back with their own rule changes, like 10 deck shoes, to increase the house edge.
NOTE:  Uston, a member of the Blackjack Hall of Fame, also penned, in just four days, Mastering PAC-MAN, which hit the New York Times Best Seller list.

William Harding
The late US president, the country’s 29th, Harding, really like to gamble, although it seems he wasn’t very good at it. In one poker game, he bet the White House china collection and lost it all in one hand.

Fun Facts
ICM, also known as the Independent Chip Model, is a mathematical formula used by poker players to calculate the equity of their chip stack in a tournament. Players often use these calculations to make better decisions in subsequent hands or even to determine a fair and equitable deal when chopping up remaining prize money. Tournament chips hold a non-linear value, meaning one big blind is worth more to a short stack than one big blind for the chip leader.

Billy Walters: Legendary Gambler

He was a dirt poor kid from Kentucky….broke 15 times….and then, as he says, started to focus.  a 30 year winning streak followed, making him perhaps the greatest, and richest professional gambler of all time!

Its the story of a degenerate gambler turned good…myth and legend…Billy Walters, despite making close to half a million dollars a year as a successful used car dealer, was often penniless…broke…the profits gone on a faded dream of beating the point spread.  At 35, he was a pathological gambler, and loser…he owed money to the bookies, couldn’t get credit, and was into his third marriage with an ill son How’d he turn it around?  Focus and dedication!  He moved to Vegas in ’82, and forget the fact he went broke 15 times, his 30-year winning streak was underway. Yes, things all changed when he joined the now-famous Computer Group, a sports betting machine that understood how to use computers to analyze statistical data to predict game outcomes.  This group was good.  Starting with yearly winnings of $100-grand, the group eventually was pulling in more than $1million a week. So dominate, so big, the group could move the betting line!  What an edge. Its 17 members were arraigned on 120 counts of conspiracy gambling and racketeering…all charges were eventually dismissed…but the group dissolved.  If big bets make you a legend….Walters is.  He wagers more than a million dollars on a typical work day, winning those bets makes you the best. Billy Walters can certainly claim to be the best….he owns a lifelong 57% winning percentage betting sports….he won $3.5 million on the Saints to win the  2010 super bowl….new orleans were 3 point underdogs…walters and his team of experts had them as favourites…and pounced.  He found an edge and took, something he’s down time and again….in 1986, he found a flaw in a roulette wheel at the golden nugget and took full advantage, exploiting it to the tune of $3.8 million.  The once dirt poor kid, degenerate gambler, is ow worth hundreds of millions of dollars.  He owns 7 homes around the world, one worth a whopping $29 million, 8 car dealerships, 9 golf courses, shopping centers, commercial properties, a $20 million private jet….he manages a team of sports consultants and programmers…who help him make, in a good year, $15 million. Worth noting, that’s only 20 % on his revenues.  Professional gambler, legend and High Roller – Billy Walters!

Fun Facts

Billy Walters made his first wager at the age of nine, staking his paper route money on the Yankees in the 1955 World Series. The Dodgers won in seven games, but the boy was hooked.

Montagu Sandwich, Eric Seidel, Is Poker a Sport?

Hey High Rollers, was the sandwich conceived over a three-day poker game?  Makes sense doesn’t it.  Is poker a sport?  Let us know on facebook or twitter @highrollerradio

Two great interviews now playing at www.highrollerradio.net – Justin Oliver, bracelet winner and son of a world famous jeweller, and Ryan Laplante, who cashes 6 times at the WSOP this year and made his 3rd final table.  Listen to them now.  Also, click the banner below and bet with us at Bet Online.  2-to-1 you’ll LOVE it!

Sandwich – Poker

John Montagu spent years travelling across Europe, assigned as Secretary of the US Navy. Commissioned to rebuild the Navy as a good war-force, John had a lot of downtime and often found himself fighting boredom. Now, sometimes when you get bored you try to create your own excitement and such was the case with our chap John. He quickly became entangled in some sketchy activity and some minor corruption cases.  After his wife was murdered by someone unknown thugs, Montagu delved into a deep depression.  When sad, which was often, he would go on these crazy gambling sprees, what alcoholics might call  binging.

While on these sprees, these binges, Montagu wouldn’t eat and once went for days without drinking water, not even a sip. This odd, peculiar way of life often worried Montagu’s servant, who knew a life of gambling and fasting couldn’t be healthy.  So, on one occasion, with Montagu on a three day gambling bender, no food or water just gambling, his servant suggested Montagu eat some beef, his favorite.  Montagu declined, only because he didn’t want to leave the table. His obsession, his compulsion with gambling had the better of him.  Luckily, his quick thinking servant decided to slip some beef between two slices of bread and slide it toward his boss.  Montagu loved it!  He even asked for another. His friends/opponents tried this new food concoction and they, too, loved it.

Yes, the sandwich was born over a three day poker game.

Is Poker a Sport?

well, more people put competitive eating and chess ahead of poker, in terms of those activities being called a sport.  Cheerleading and fishing also ranked ahead of poker…According to an article in Deadspin, the results are thanks to reddit users…460 people responded to a simple ‘Yes’ or ‘no’ on a selection  of 53 different activities….  poker…the game we love…was dead last!  So, the majority consensus is, its not a sport…but one things for sure…they won’t be playing for $10 million at the hot dog eating championship….It might just be a game…but it certainly has sporting aspects, doesn’t it…skill, psychological warfare, ups and downs, competitiveness….and most definitely the thrill of victory and agony of defeat….what do you think…poker a sport?  Let us know @highrollerradio.
