WSOP History & Ryan Laplante Interview

Hey High Rollers, sorry it’s been a while since we’ve blogged….but we’ve got a ton of great stuff for you tonight; interview with ‘young gun’ Ryan Laplante, who had 6 cashes and a final table (his 3rd) at the World Series of Poker this summer.  He’s cashes more than 3300 times online and has won more than a million dollars.

Ryan Laplante Q&A HERE

During the month of September, Laplante expects to play some 1,500 tournaments at the World Championship of Online Poker over the course of three weeks. His buy-ins will total between $70,000 and $100,000.  The life of a dedicated pro!

Laplante says playing a 1¢/2¢ cash game online is the equivalent to sitting down in a $1/$2 game at the casino.  He says a 2¢/5¢ game is about the same as a $2/$5 game live.  Online poker is tough!

WSOP History

Aces get cracked against Aces in the $1 million buy-in Big One for One Drop:

Watch

This is what they’re palying for…

It is considered the most coveted non-monetary prize in poker – the bracelet!  Since 1976, a bracelet has been awarded to the winner of every event at the annual World Series of Poker.  In the early years only a few bracelets were awarded each year.  In 1990, 14 bracelets were handed out.  By 2000, that number jumped to 24.  In 2014, there were 65 bracelet events at the RIO.  Bracelets are also handed out at the World Series of Poker Europe, the WSOP National Championship and the World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific.

Tidbit:  As of the 2013 WSOP APAC, there have been 1008 bracelets awarded in the torunament’s 45 year history, 462 of which were won by 140 players who have won at least two bracelets.

Bracelet Design

Jason Arasheben, famed jewelry designer and owner of Jason of Beverly Hills, was chosen as the official bracelet manufacturer in 2012.  Arasheben has designed championship rings for the 2009 & 2010 Los Angeles Lakers and the 2011 Green Bay Packers, among others. The 2012 main event bracelet featured each suit in the deck in either rubies of black diamonds.  It featured 160 grams of 14 karat gold and 35 karats of flawless diamonds.

* At first, the WSOP bracelet didn’t have much prestige. 10-time bracelet winner Doyle Brunson says his first one “didn’t mean anything” to him and admits he didn’t even pick two of them up.

* “Better than an Oscar,” Jennifer Tilly, on winning her WSOP bracelet in the 2005 Ladies Championship.

“Not too many players try to bluff me. If there’s going to be bluffing or stealing going on, I’m  going to be the one doing to it.” – Johnny Chan

“Look honey, I was supposed to go broke on that hand.  But, they forgot one thing; I can dodge bullets baby.” – Phil Hellmuth

More POKER QUOTES

Moneymaker & Gamble?

Chris Moneymaker sold a 20% stake of himself for the 2003 World Series of Poker main event to his friend, David Gamble.  Moneymaker and Gamble?  Really?  A tidbit that got lost in the shuffle.

Flashback

Sammy Farha played a big hand at the end of Day 2 at the 2003 main event, losing to Barry Greenstein when he hit a straight on the river.  Farha was crippled with only 5000 chips left.  He played and won every remaining hand of the evening, seven of them, including the first two ‘in the dark’, boosting his stack to 54,000.  He eventually finished 2nd losing to Chris Moneymaker in their classic heads-up duel.

Did you know?
In a bid to prevent men from playing in the WSOP Ladies Championship, and men have in the past played it on principle, organizers charge men $10,000 to play.  Women only have to play $1,000.  Some men believe it’s unfair women have their own event, where a bracelet is awarded.

* Nolan Dalla has presided over EVERY bracelet ceremony at the World Series of Poker since 2002. Every single one!

Origins
The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is a series of poker tournaments held each year in Las Vegas.  Its origins date back to 1970, when Benny Binion invited seven of the best-known poker players to the Horseshoe Casino for a single tournament, with a set start and stop time. The winner, Johnny Moss, was determined by secret ballot.

Legend has it…
The modern day World Series of Poker originated from a two-person poker match between Nicholas Andreas “Nick the Greek” Dandolos and Johnny Moss between January 1951 and May 1951. Set-up as a tourist attraction, the two played nearly every variation of poker in existence. Both were inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 1979.

Ladies Night

In 2012, Gaelle Baumann of France and Elisabeth Hille finished 10th and 11th respectively, what is known in poker circles as ‘Bubbling’ the final table.

Hey High Rollers, how are ya doing?  The snow’s flying where I’m at….gonna be a white Christmas here…Hope the Reindeer’s dress warm….today’s chat brought to you by our good friends atVegasTopDogs.com….Tony K and company, they  pick winners folks…

Alright, I want to read you a few quotes…”I’m not a prodigy, I just work at every poker hand.” Phil Ivey.  “Put yourself in a position to get lucky.”  Tom McEvoy, the 1983 world champ and former guest of this show.  “Patience is the companion of wisdom.”  Saint Augustine.  And, “No Limit Hold’em is 70% psychological, 20% mathematical and 10% magical,” that quote comes to us from our guest today, author of a fantastic new book called Poker Samadhi, designed to help you reach a new level of consciousness at the poker table….its all about divine energy and spirit baby.  She’s the founder and chief guru of Poker Samadhi, located in Las Vegas Nevada….Danielle Striker our guest today…Danielle, good to have you, thanks for being a High Roller…

Thank-you so much for the book…I just love it, keep it at my bedside.  Now,  I know a little bit about your story, a New Yorker, a Broadway dancer, motorcycle nut and now poker crazy…you had a very serious motorbike accident, can you tells us about that…

You write, “and then I had an epiphany, I realized the game of poker was a symbolic representation of life.  The way people play poker and live their lives are the same.”  I love that line…can you elaborate for us?

Poker Samadhi, it’s a way of life for you isn’t it?

In the dedication, you say that your dad taught you that “You are where your attention is.”  That’s dynamite stuff.

I listened to a Phil Hellmuth interview years ago, where he said its absolutely vital to be in the right head-space when you play…citing an example of How an alcoholic, deep down, may feel like he/or/she deserves to lose and therefore does…poker players put in crazy hours…crazy things happen, you make take a bad beat, the guy beside you may smell bad, talk too much…and you’re playing for cash, in some cases for a living and you need to keep your head right?  you need to think straight..with so many variables that can be tough?

70% psychological, 20% mathematical, and 10 per cent magical?

You have a close relationship with former guest of the show Tom McEvoy, world champion, author, very impressive man…how did that relationship develop?
What has he taught you about the game of poker…aside from basic strategy…the life part of it?

You guys have some big plans in 2004?

What are some common mistakes you think people make at the poker table because they’re not fully in tune with themselves…bankroll management, I assume is one of them?

In the book, you have quoted some of the games very best, some of them legends..Stu Ungar, show me a good loser and i’ll show you a loser…what was the process in selecting these quotes, was there a criteria?

The interview is slated for later today…stay tuned, Danielle Striker, a good friend of the show, on HRR>

Marc Etienne McLaughlin Interview Notes

Hey High Rollers, had an excellent interview with Marc Etienne McLaughlin, 6th place finisher in the Main Event…the French-Canadian was having fun, leaping into the crowd every time he received a walk in the Big Blind…made a great comeback, but then suffered a bad beat and was eliminated in 6th.  Good friends with Jonathan Duhamel, 2010 world champ, and now good friends with High Roller NATION!

Marc Etienne McLaughlin

www.highrollerradio.net

Hey High Rollers, you just watched him on television as part of the much heralded ‘November 9’…our guest today – a Canadian, who just enjoyed the biggest score of his young life, 1.6 ,million, ….but first, today’s chat brought to you by our friends at VegasopDogs.com, America’s #1 handicappers…they pick winners folks.

Alright, just had Steve Dannemann on the show, runner-up in  ’05…and he said he watched the final table and called it boring….there was only one guy having fun…the Canadian, Marc Etienne McLaughlin our guest today, from Quebec…good friends with 2010 world champ Jonathan Duhamel…Marc, welcome to show, thanks for being a High Roller…

Hey man, congratulations on your 6th place finish…I know you were hoping for more, you went in 3rd in chips I believe…the cards didn’t seem to be with you….how would you describe your final table experience?

What did you think of the outcome…Ryan Reiss, pretty much dominating Jay Farber heads-up…and then making a controversial remark, saying he feels like he is the best player in the world?  Twitter lit up, many feel he showed some disrespect to veterans of the game…guys who have won multiple bracelets, like Ivey, Hellmuth, Matusow?

During the telecast, your buddy Jonathan Duhamel was interviewed during one of the breaks…and I found it interesting, when he said your ‘rail’ was basically the same rail…the same people, that he had at  the Penn and Teller theatre three years ago when he won it all?  You guys are good friends?  Did you grow up together?

What type of guy is Jonathan?

How do you help each other with your games?

What comes to mind when I say the Montreal Canadiens?  How about the Toronto Maple Leafs?

You a George St. Pierre fan?  Did you watch the fight and, if so, do you think that was a good decision?

Tom McEvoy

1983 World Champ

www.highrollerradio.net

Alright High Rollers, today a guy who made it to the top in the world of professional poker…the absolute top…our chat today is brought to you our friends at VegasTopDogs.com, America’s #1 Handicappers, they pick winners folks…vergastopdogs.com

Alright…I am so looking forward to this discussion…this guy is the 1983 world champ….first player ever to win the championship after satelliting in…Isn’t that what  Moneymaker did, and Poker exploded?  He’s won 4 bracelets…he was instrumental in bringing fresh air into the poker room, we’ll talk about that. He’s co-authored several books….good ones too…co-authored them with guys like TJ Cloutier, Brad Daughtery and Max Stern…he’s written for Card Player and he reps the online Giant PokerStars….oh, and he is a newly minted member of the Poker Hall of Fame…icing on the cake of a brilliant poker career….

World champ Tom McEvoy is our geust today…What a pleasure, thanks for being a High Roller Tom…

We gotta start with the Hall of Fame, you’re going to be officially inducted November 3rd at the November 9 showdown, talk about pomp and pageantry…Congratulations  man…well-deserved…where does this rank on your list of achievements…

I know you’ve been on the ballot before…this is something you really wanted…and it just wasn’t happening…what was different this year.

So much history in the hall…all the legends…forgive me for saying, but you’re on the of the poker old’timers now….when you were a so-called young gun…who were some of the players you looked up to?

Class of 2013…

Heads-up battle with Rod Peete was the longest in WSOP History for a l;ongtime, finally surpassed by the epic Chip Reese Andy Bloch showdown…can you tell us about your opponent and that battle…

And you satellite’d in….why do you think poker exploded when Moneymaker did essentially the same thing you did…is it simply because you did it live…where as he satellithed in online?

You’ve had some epic heads-up matches and victorious ones too…you beat Peete for the world title…you defeated another world champ Berry Johntson tom win a bracelet in Limit Omaha…and you’re first bracelet in Razz…you’ve got two in razz….but you bested Donacha O’Dea…the Irish legend…those are big names?

Tom…do you feel you get enough credit for your poker accomplishments…I know you’re in the Hall now…but when poker exploded…some others got a lot of limelight…where I feel…you didn’t necessarily get a ton of tv time…relatively speaking, as compared to Hellmuth, Brunson, Matusow, Laak, Esfandiari?

How good did it feel to win the WSOP’s 1st ever  champions invitational….

Big issues facing poker?

Greg Raymer Interview

www.highrollerradio.net

Hey High Rollers,

What a thrill…and I mean that…an absolute thrill…to be speaking with our guest today….can you say world champion?  Today’s interview is brought to by our friends at VegasTopDogs.com, America’s #1 sports handicappers…featuring the like of Tony K and Joe Duffy…they pick winners…at vegastopdogs.com.

I’ll never forget the image…I think it was a delayed reaction, we’re going to ask him about that today…but then the hands raised, a primal scream…joy, elation, relief, probably all rolled into one…because in 2004…this guy…climbed to the top of the poker mountain…a view, by the way, only a very special few get, to win the main event of the World Series of Poker…minted a world champ forever…and a little slice of WSOP immortality…not to mention the money…and it was a good chunk, $5 million….oh, and those glasses….gave poker face a whole new meaning…

I said it off the top…it is a thrill to welcome The Fossilman, Greg Raymer to the show, Greg, welcome, thanks for being a High Roller:

I’ve always wanted to ask you….that final hand against David Williams…your full house, what was it deuces full of 8’s….it seemed to me like you hesitated before raising your arms in victory…not sure if that was the tv edit…but did it take you a moment….to realize you had just won the title?

We just had Pamela Brunson on…I know you know her dad…but have you met her before…

Money, teaching…

Greg, I met you in London England, the Hilton Metrople for the EPT London…we shook hands, I said I was a fan…and you were accommodating, very gracious….does that come natural to you…because…with the title comes exposure, fame…the lot….was it an easy adjustment for you?

I read somewhere that you made a deal with your wife…you’d play on a $1,000 bankroll, if you lost it…you’d quit poker…is that true, and how close did you come to a balance of zero before you hit the jackpot…

I’m sure poker was changing at the time you won won…ho has it changed since…are the kids really that crazy and ultra-aggressive?

What has poker taught you about life…I mean, you travel the world….been to a lot of places, seen a lot of things…

Lot of people know you used to be a patent attorney…not to many, I’m guessing, know you have a Master’s Degree in biochemistry…what kinds of things were you tackling there…and any relatin to poker?

I assume the poker world today, because there’s so much money to be won…is full of very smart people…can you give us an idea…isn’t Chris Binger a rocket scientist or something…you’ve got bankers, stock guys, engineers…it’s a tough racket

Hall of Fame inductions officially take place November 3…Scotty Nguyen, Tom McEvoy, another world champ…your thoughts on the inductees this year….

Is that something you aspire too?

Is there a fraternity of past winners of the main event?

After you win the main event…you finish 25th the next year…what kind of grind was that?  That was quite an accomplishment.

Mike Matusow…that run-in with him…how is your relationship with him now?

Lon McEachern Interview Notes on HRR

Hey High Rollers, what a thrill for ‘The NATION’ today, just days before the so-called November 9 resume play at the Penn & Teller Theatre in Las Vegas, we had a chance to chat with the man who will be broadcasting all the action…ESPN’s Lon McEachern, the straight man to Norman Chad’s funny….the perfect pair…such chemistry…and you know, what a job ESPN and its crew has done to promote this beautiful game.  Here are our interview notes for Mr. Lon McEachern.  2-to-1 you’ll LOVE it

Alright High Rollers,

Today, the voice of poker in America….yes…but first, today’s chat on High Roller Radio brought to you by our friends at VegasTopDogs.com, Tony K and company, America’s #1 handicappers…they pick winners folks….

I am a huge fan of this guy…he’s the straight man, if you will, to Norman Chad’s funny – what a career in the broadcast booth…he’s compiled quite a resume…k1 Kickboxing, Pride, billiards, you’ve heard him do Strikeforce on NBC, PBA Bowling….I think…he even broadcasted Scrabble…but of course, he is most famous, at least among this crowd, for his outstanding coverage of the World Series of Poker on ESPN…. Oh did he hit it big when Moneymaker survived Farha,…and there he was, front row seat, with his headphones on, just smiling….because poker was about to explode….and he had the best view in the house..

Lon McEachern (ma-CAIR-en)…our guest today…Lon, welcome to the show…

Alright, we’re a few days away from the big showdown at the Penn and Teller Theatre, November 9…how have you been preparing for this marquis event?

Are you happy JC Tran is there…a BIG Name pro…doesn’t always happen these days with the incredible field sizes…

For our listeners who haven’t been to this vaunted event…can you describe for us the atmosphere at the P&T Theatre? For the final table?

Lon, in ’03, when everyone’s saying Farha would come back and beat the kid, “…just too experienced,” I remember Dan Harrington saying….did you have a sense then, of what was about to happen…I mean, the epic rise of this game…right into the mainstream?

What do you make of the sums of money these guys are playing for…not just in the tournaments…but in the side games…and have you gotten used to it?

Who are some of the poker players who stand out of the crowd for you…that when they’re at a table you’re commentating on you say yes…this will be fun?

Let’s talk about Mr. Chad…the comedian…what type of guy is he…..what you see and hear on camera, on twitter and so on…is that really who he is?

You guys have great chemistry…was it always that way…at the beginning?

Side kicks…you’ve had a few interesting guys in the booth with you, Ken Shamrock, Randy Petersen, Norman Chad…what strikes you as most interesting about each, all very successful in their own right…

How would you describe your broadcasting career?

Tell us about the bowling…PBA, it seems to me…is big right now…guys are making a tremendous living at 10-pin…national sponsorship…but it hasn’t really taken off like poker…

Darts, big in England…what do you make of these secondary sports…poker bowling, darts, making it big…is it all about promotion?

You covered a lot of sports…where does a superstar poker player rank in celebrity with say a football player, hockey player etc….

Curious Lon…how cutthroat is the sports broadcasting business in the USA….everyone wants that dream gig….

Is it true you broadcasted scrabble?  And if so, are you kidding me?

You can visit Lon’s website at www.LonMcEachern.com and be sure to watch the final table Monday & Tuesday.

World Champs Raymer & McEvoy to Gues on SHOW – YES!

October 22, 2013Hey High Rollers, how great is this?  Not only a sign, an indication, we’re growing our library by two quality – HIGH QUALITY – guests, but we are also GROWING the SITE too.  We are so happy, thrilled actually, to report we have confirmed a couple of world champions for the show.  YES!

Greg ‘The Fossilman’ Raymer and our program director Derrick Oliver-Dewan have been corresponding by email…and it looks like things are set for 2pm EST Wednesday.  Raymer, of course, the 2004 world champ, when he defeated ‘young gun’ David Williams heads up with a full house, deuces full of his pocket eights…Williams held a boat as well…deuces full of his 4’s….$5 million richer for his efforts and a piece of WSOP immortality.  Heard a story that initially, Raymer’s wife wasn’t too happy with his play online so he struck a deal with her…he would play a $1,000 bankroll and should he lose that he would quit poker….the rest, as they say, is history.  Can’t wait to chat with the Fossilman.

I met Greg at the EPT LONDON at the Hilton Metropole, very briefly a few years about and he shook my hand, said hello, graciously accepted my compliments and was very accommodating.  This guy has been GREAT for the game.   Now, we know he’s had some bad press lately, but we will certainly will NOT be broaching that subject, unless he wants to.  Our site is about poker history, legends of the game…which Raymer most certainly is!  Thank-you Greg for agreeing to guest with us.  Oh man, can’t wait.

Also…

1983 woeld champ...newly minted member of the Hall of Fame.

1983 world champ…newly minted member of the Hall of Fame.

How about it…Tom McEvoy, YES!!!!  The 1983 world champ, an author, a gentleman of the game, and now a newly minted Poker Hall of Famer.  A credit well deserved…you know he’s been on the ballot 5 straight years…from Bridesmaid to Bride in ’13.  McEvoy is a 4-time bracelet winner and has always been good for the game,

I met Tom in Montreal, at the Poker Pro Canada Classic, where he played as part of a Deepstacks University Course offered to anyone who would pony up $500.  It was well worth it…you can make that money back in one pot with the information the pros conveyed.  Great stuff.  The course also included Adam Levy, otherwise known as Roothlus online, Michael ‘The Grinder’ Mizrachi, and Tristen Wade, an excellent online sniper.  Tom was absolutely delightful, gracious, kind in his answers…his table manner and his instruction were both inviting…and it was quite interesting to recognize the differences in the two styles of instruction:  Tom more old school…while The Grinder, Levy and Wade represented the new age player…ultra aggressive…get those chips at any cost…fight, fight, fight for each hand.  I am not saying Tom is tight…just that his play is different, for sure.

Tom McEvoy has been great fiends with Kathy Liebert, another former guest and $6 million plus in career earnings, but I’m not sure if they’re close anymore.  I may ask about that?  Here’s the thing…this honour means the world to Mr. McEvoy and he deserves it.  Interesting though, that in past years he was waiting and waiting for the phone call and it HURT him when it never came.  This year…he told me…he just ‘let go’…whatever happens happens…and not two weeks later he got the call….wow!  A lesson there somewhere, right?

Explosive!!! Johnny Hughes on High Roller Radio

Hey High Rollers,

What a thrill!  Yesterday, I got to speak to Johnny Hughes, author of Famous Gamblers, Poker History and Texas stories, who is now a two-time guest of High Roller Radio.  Again, he does not disappoint.  Explosive suggestions that legendary gamblers Archie Karas, Phil Ivey and Stu Ungar may have cheated their way to the top!  Wow.

BetOnline

Here is a quote from our Q&A:

“Yes, it ruins his (Archie Karas) legacy!  To me he was not a great gambler at all, he was just a dang sucker who lost all his money.  Stu Ungar was one of the greatest suckers of all time and ended dead of drugs, I mean how can you say he was great at anything.  And, by the way, I suspect when he made some of those thin calls he knew one of his opponents hole cards.”

Johnny also provides tales about Amarillo Slim, Benny Binion, Johnny Moss and his mentor Curly Cavitt, who he calls one of the greatest of all-time.  “Doyle Brunson told me that Curly was the consummate gambler; he had NO leaks.”

What about cell phones at the table?  “They need to go,” Hughes says, “there are so many ways to cheat with cell phones.”

This is a great interview!  If you love poker history, gambling anecdotes and quips about some of he great cheats and their methods.  Plain and simple, Johnny Hughes is our kind of guy; from the Old School, he’s entertaining, well spoken and a guy who can talk your ear off about the old-time gambler, about the old time west, about cheaters.  Important to note; Johnny does not advocate cheating and stresses it is extremely rare.  “The casinos won’t cheat you, they have too much to lose,” he says.  He also explains what to do should you spot cheating in the poker room, “Do NOT confront the cheater, they may be crazy and try to harm you.  Quit the game and rub your thumb on the floor person’s back.  That let’s them know there is cheating or something fishy going on at the table.”

In our first interview we spoke a lot about his book; including a great quote about Buddy Holly and his poker playing about, “He was terrible,” he says.  “He was very KIND,” he jokes.

Thank-you Johnny Dynamite Chat.  Can’t wait to have you back on.

John O’Shea Interview notes – HRR Quote of the Day

John O’Shea

The Gambler

www.highrollerradio.net

25 Team Parlay at BetOnline>

Hey High Rollers, this to me is a much-anticipated interview…This guy has decided to make gambling his life…he’s made a decision to accept the swings…the incredible swings that come with such a vocation…and I respect that….because, trust me…it’s not for everyone.  They made a documentary about called The Gambler, which depicted the up and down lifestyle that comes with being a Rounder, ready for this?  Wagering up to 5 million in one year….wow…He’s an Irishman…who some believe have all the luck…but I’m sure our guest today believes more in skill than luck…ex-accountant turned poker pro John O’Shea joins us…John thanks for being a High Roller…

I checked your bio on The Hendon Mob database and your resume is just littered with score after score….17k here, 25 there….a 8k, 8k, of course the 200,000 for that 6th place finish at the WPT world championship…what does it take to sustain consistency in your line of work?

How did the WSOP go for you this year?

I know you love the Irish Open…some people over here don’t realize how big that event is…how do you compare the Irish Open with the WSOP?

I know you as a poker player…that documentary, which we’ll talk about in a minute, open my eyes up to you as a gambler, what amount of time do you spend on each…is it 50/50…or are you just looking for good spots overall?

You were an accountant….what made you drop that profession….for cards?

The documentary, The Gambler, which aired in Ireland to a big audience, followed you over the xurse of 6-months…was that an intrusive process…did you enjoy it?

It suggests you gamble up to $5 million British pounds per year…some might call it an addiction…how do you answer that?

What are the emotional swings like?  I mean, most 9 to 5’ers would have no idea…none whatsoever….can you tell our audience…what it’s like…is it like a job in some respects?

How do you handle the losses….I mean, you’re wagering p to 100 grand a day…it’s got to be tough sometimes?

In the movie…your family seemed quite concerned…are they still…?

“I’d have maybe e5m in bets a year and, supposing they are all at even money, I know I’m going to lose about €2.25m of them and I’d win €2.7m at the end of the year…you’re left with €500,000. That’s the 10 per cent edge you’re trying to grind out,” O’Shea explains.

What’s like driving in Monte Carlo in a Ferrari?

You travel a lot what are some of the nicest stops on the poker calendar?

Ireland’s had a ton of great poker players…for a small country…to what do you attribute the success of your country in big money events?

Nolan Dalla

– WSOP Media Director, Poker Night in America, Author

www.highrollerradio.net

Hey High Rollers,

This is going to be a treat, a real treat…I read the book years ago and it remains one of my all-time favorite poker books, One of a Kind, the Stu Ungar biography…outstanding…and our guest today wrote it…

currently, he’s one of the brains behind a new poker television show Poker Night in America, which I applied for by the way, rejected! and he also happens to be the media director for the WSOP, only the biggest poker outfit in the world.

He is a legendary figure in the poker world…a poker historian and ambassador to the game.

I know he likes to banter about politics too, with his political science degree from the University of Texas, he’s got a masters as well..and di some work in the government…we’ll talk about that…maybe we’ll get him to paint us a picture of America right now…in poker and in life.  Nolan Dalla is our guest today…Nolan, the pleasure is ours thanks for being a High Roller man:

Right off the top, I’ve got to say…your book was so much better than the movie High Roller, or Stuey in some places, I’m sure you’ve heard that a lot…it was a wonderful offering…my hat is off to you for that…how did that project come to be?  were you friends with Stu…because let me say, you were able to not only paint a picture of his brilliance with a deck of cards…but also managed to get some candid admissions from him as well…with respect specifically to his drug use and how it affected him as a father…

What did you think of the movie?
<NFL Betting>

Mike Sexton said in the eulogy he wanted people to remember Stu for his greatest at the table and not his troubles off it….always wanted to ask you…should we do that….should we simply forget the degenerate he was was…and simply hold him us as maybe the greatest ever?

Here are my top 3 poker books…One of a Kind, by you, The Professor, The Banker and the Suicide King by Michael Craig and Mr. McManuses Positively Fifth Street….you friends with those guys, what did you think of those two books?

I do want to talk about the World Series of Poker….but first, Poker Night in America….tell us about it, it’s new, it sounds exciting…

On the phone with Nolan Dalla…poker ambassador of all poker ambassadors….Nolan you’ve got one of the greatest jobs in the world…when someone wins a bracelet, you are the first to greet them and say well-done…that’s got to be highly rewarding, especially on those days someone wins WSOP gold for the first time…

Can you walk us through your role with the WSOP?

So many great stories from this past summer at the RIO…Canadian Invasion….Negreanu fighting for Player of the Year…two women winning open events…Barny Boatmen capturing his first, Johnny Bax, the legendary Cliff Josephy winning #2, , Mike Matusow getting number 4…what stood out for you, Doyle Brunson running deep in  the main?  What were your highlights?

Please keep up the broadcasts online, the final tables…poker junkies like me…we love that…gets better each year….do you like jumping in the broadcast booth?  David Tuchman phenomenal…

POY race…Greg Mueller was on our show…ranting about the fact that Kid Poker was already 400 some odd points ahead of him in POY race before he even stepped in the RIO…suggesting perhaps…it should start in vegas…and then, anyone having a good summer could then travel the world and vy for that prestigious award…

Player of the year and the world champion…forever immortalized on the walls at the RIO…very nice touch..

November 9…any predictions on atmosphere or winner?

How has the absence of online poker in America affected the WSOP?  Where are we with regulating things?

Political science guy….what is going on in America right now…your chance to rant about what you see as right and wrong with the Nation…I’m in Canada…but I am interested to hear what you think of the state of the union if you will…

Rapid Fire:

Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, Antonio Esfandiari, Doyle Brunson, Tom Dwan, Vanessa Selbst,Daniel Negreanu the new age player versus the veteran old-timer, sunglasses at the poker table, a shot clock in poker, Black Friday, today’s interviewer?

www.highrollerradio.net

Did you know?  In addition to a long list of poker and gambling articles published in Gambling Times, Card Player, Poker Digest, Poker Pages, Poker Player, and The Intelligent Gambler, Nolan Dalla is the author of One of a Kind, Stu Ungar’s biography.

Thank-you Nolan.

Did you know?  As media director for the WSOP, Nolan Dalla, author of the legendary One of a Kind, the biography of Stu Ungar,  has been at every bracelet ceremony at the WSOP since 2002.
