Giants Score Safety

Real estate man and huge Giants fan Jonah Rechnitz picked a popular prop bet – first score – using an unpopular choice –  safety. Well, the Giants forced Tom Brady into an intentional grounding from his own end zone to put New York up 2-0 to begin Super Bowl XLVI. Rechnitz dropped $1,000 on the ticket to net $50,000 at 50-to-1 odds and promptly vowed to give away all of that cash to charity.
Phil Michelson
Call it a hunch. In 2000, Phil Michelson wagered a cool $20,000 on the Ravens to win it all – before the season started. Baltimore was a 22-to-1 longshot to capture the Vince Lombardi trophy, but they did! 34-7 over the Giants. ‘Lefty’ collected $560,000. That’s like making a 60-footer for birdie.
Mr. Las Vegas Scores
In 1989, Bob Stupak, better known as ‘Mr. Las Vegas’, wagered $1 million on the underdog Bengals (-7) against the 49’ers. Cincinnati may have lost, but thanks to the cover, Stupak did not. (Always the pro, rumor has it Stupak hedged at halftime with a smaller bet on the Niners.)
The 2nd biggest upset in Super Bowl history was in 2002, when the Patriots beat the Rams. That game netted the MGM Resorts Race & Sports Book $4.8 million.
“The gambling industry is willing to devise anything to bring more money their way in profits. Prop betting is probably very popular because gamblers seek frequent and immediate action and gratification.”
– Bruce SvarePsychology Professor on prop betting.
The bookmaker is simply a middle-man who operates on a small profit margin and, ideally, he likes to see half the money wagered on one team and half on the other because if he can he will be assured a profit. If too much of the money goes on one team, the bookmaker will move the line or point-spread to encourage bets on the other team in an effort to balance his book. The person you are attempting to beat is the oddsmaker and his views on each team’s chances.
Like Father, Like Son?
Legendary gambler and prop betting specialist Titanic Thompson was honored at the first World Series of Poker in 1970. He had made gambling trips with his eldest son Tommy for many years, but after he died Tommy, a skilled, successful gambler in his own right, gave up a life of making bets for a church ministry. He successfully counsels prisoners and preaches to convince others to stay away from gambling.

Billy Walters: Legendary Gambler

He was a dirt poor kid from Kentucky….broke 15 times….and then, as he says, started to focus.  a 30 year winning streak followed, making him perhaps the greatest, and richest professional gambler of all time!

Its the story of a degenerate gambler turned good…myth and legend…Billy Walters, despite making close to half a million dollars a year as a successful used car dealer, was often penniless…broke…the profits gone on a faded dream of beating the point spread.  At 35, he was a pathological gambler, and loser…he owed money to the bookies, couldn’t get credit, and was into his third marriage with an ill son How’d he turn it around?  Focus and dedication!  He moved to Vegas in ’82, and forget the fact he went broke 15 times, his 30-year winning streak was underway. Yes, things all changed when he joined the now-famous Computer Group, a sports betting machine that understood how to use computers to analyze statistical data to predict game outcomes.  This group was good.  Starting with yearly winnings of $100-grand, the group eventually was pulling in more than $1million a week. So dominate, so big, the group could move the betting line!  What an edge. Its 17 members were arraigned on 120 counts of conspiracy gambling and racketeering…all charges were eventually dismissed…but the group dissolved.  If big bets make you a legend….Walters is.  He wagers more than a million dollars on a typical work day, winning those bets makes you the best. Billy Walters can certainly claim to be the best….he owns a lifelong 57% winning percentage betting sports….he won $3.5 million on the Saints to win the  2010 super bowl….new orleans were 3 point underdogs…walters and his team of experts had them as favourites…and pounced.  He found an edge and took, something he’s down time and again….in 1986, he found a flaw in a roulette wheel at the golden nugget and took full advantage, exploiting it to the tune of $3.8 million.  The once dirt poor kid, degenerate gambler, is ow worth hundreds of millions of dollars.  He owns 7 homes around the world, one worth a whopping $29 million, 8 car dealerships, 9 golf courses, shopping centers, commercial properties, a $20 million private jet….he manages a team of sports consultants and programmers…who help him make, in a good year, $15 million. Worth noting, that’s only 20 % on his revenues.  Professional gambler, legend and High Roller – Billy Walters!

Fun Facts

Billy Walters made his first wager at the age of nine, staking his paper route money on the Yankees in the 1955 World Series. The Dodgers won in seven games, but the boy was hooked.

Montagu Sandwich, Eric Seidel, Is Poker a Sport?

Hey High Rollers, was the sandwich conceived over a three-day poker game?  Makes sense doesn’t it.  Is poker a sport?  Let us know on facebook or twitter @highrollerradio

Two great interviews now playing at www.highrollerradio.net – Justin Oliver, bracelet winner and son of a world famous jeweller, and Ryan Laplante, who cashes 6 times at the WSOP this year and made his 3rd final table.  Listen to them now.  Also, click the banner below and bet with us at Bet Online.  2-to-1 you’ll LOVE it!

Sandwich – Poker

John Montagu spent years travelling across Europe, assigned as Secretary of the US Navy. Commissioned to rebuild the Navy as a good war-force, John had a lot of downtime and often found himself fighting boredom. Now, sometimes when you get bored you try to create your own excitement and such was the case with our chap John. He quickly became entangled in some sketchy activity and some minor corruption cases.  After his wife was murdered by someone unknown thugs, Montagu delved into a deep depression.  When sad, which was often, he would go on these crazy gambling sprees, what alcoholics might call  binging.

While on these sprees, these binges, Montagu wouldn’t eat and once went for days without drinking water, not even a sip. This odd, peculiar way of life often worried Montagu’s servant, who knew a life of gambling and fasting couldn’t be healthy.  So, on one occasion, with Montagu on a three day gambling bender, no food or water just gambling, his servant suggested Montagu eat some beef, his favorite.  Montagu declined, only because he didn’t want to leave the table. His obsession, his compulsion with gambling had the better of him.  Luckily, his quick thinking servant decided to slip some beef between two slices of bread and slide it toward his boss.  Montagu loved it!  He even asked for another. His friends/opponents tried this new food concoction and they, too, loved it.

Yes, the sandwich was born over a three day poker game.

Is Poker a Sport?

well, more people put competitive eating and chess ahead of poker, in terms of those activities being called a sport.  Cheerleading and fishing also ranked ahead of poker…According to an article in Deadspin, the results are thanks to reddit users…460 people responded to a simple ‘Yes’ or ‘no’ on a selection  of 53 different activities….  poker…the game we love…was dead last!  So, the majority consensus is, its not a sport…but one things for sure…they won’t be playing for $10 million at the hot dog eating championship….It might just be a game…but it certainly has sporting aspects, doesn’t it…skill, psychological warfare, ups and downs, competitiveness….and most definitely the thrill of victory and agony of defeat….what do you think…poker a sport?  Let us know @highrollerradio.

Pascal LeFrancois Interview

After winning his bracelet in 2010, Canadian Pascal LeFrancois posed for the winner’s photo topless.  Following a dare from friends, he kept his word and removed his shirt for the bracelet photo – what had to be a WSOP first.  During our interview on High Roller radio, LeFranscois answered a few questions in French – What was a HRR first!

A Gamblers Edge

The story goes, as told on High Roller Radio by Howard Schwartz, the legendary gaming historian and long-time owner of the famed Gambler’s Book Club in La Vegas, that a professional poker player was sitting at his table, in the middle of his game, when he noticed in the distance on television San Diego Padres first baseman Steve Garvey’s hair.   Why is that important?  “Well, remember, the poker player was pro,” Schwartz continues in monologue, “A pro will bet on anything if he thinks he’s got an edge.  The Padres were playing the Giants at Candlestick Park and the over/under was four runs.  Garvey’s hair?  It was blowing toward home plate, blowing in and blowing hard too.  So, he figured, with a strong wind, the teams would be hard pressed to score four runs.  He made the bet and won.  That’s called finding an edge.”

Howard Schwartz Clips

The Hole-in-One Gang

This is how you do it High Rollers; an outstanding example of a well-educated and slyly calculated value bet.  A professional gambler would call it, ‘finding an edge.’  It’s amazing how just a slight edge can make good gamblers great and great gamblers legendary.  If you’re in the wagering business, you’ve got to, I repeat, you’ve got to find an edge.  Enter Paul Simmons and John Carter, a couple of slick dudes who put in the work, crunched the numbers, and found an edge.  A big one too!  The boys studied a ton of historical data and calculated the odds of a hole-in-one at the British Open to be roughly 50/50, ‘Even-Steven’s’, as the kids might say on the playground.  Collectively, they were pretty sure several unsuspecting bookies would offer considerably higher odds than the evens, or less, and they were right!  Spectacularly right.  The bookies didn’t know what him them.  So, the boys found their edge.  Now, it was time to capitalize.  They placed a large number of relatively small bets all over the country at odds of up to 100/1.  What an edge!  You guessed it; Brian Marchbank scored an ace during the major championship and the boys scored huge. Depending on whom you believe, the pair won somewhere between £600,000 and £1 million – proving that bookies and the house can be beat if you find an edge.

Britain’s Greatest Gambler?

Money is no object to the true High Roller.  The Phil Ivey’s, Patrik Antonius’ and Tom Dwan’s of the world, the guys who have no fear and no regard for money, they’re the true gamblers.  Like Archie Karas, Nick ‘the Greek, Dandelos and Stuey Ungar before them, the true gambler is willing to put it all on the line, at any time, so long as they like the odds. Have you ever heard of Harry Findlay?  Certainly not as well known to the public as the aforementioned High Rollers, but Harry Findlay is indeed a kindred spirit to them.  He’s made and lost more than most will ever know. In October 2007, Findlay, arguably Britain’s greatest ever gambler, was so convinced New Zealand would win rugby’s World Cup, a ‘sure thing’he thought, so confident he advised friends and family to put everything they had on it. His personal wager?  An astonishing $2.7 million!  Oops! The legendary ‘All-Blacks’, as the New Zealand squad is known, not only didn’t win the World Cup, they lost to France and didn’t even advance past the quarter finals.  After the France victory he said, “I thought Dan Carter was a God, the dimension that made them unbeatable.  Fundamentally, I believe I was right in my assessment of the ‘All Blacks’ as a team but it didn’t work out.  I will never again bet on rugby because I could never fancy a team as much as I fancied that New Zealand side.” Yes, even great gamblers lose.  Don’t feel too sorry for Mr. Findlay though, over the years he’s won tens of millions, much of that on Tiger Woods, Roger Federer and his own horses.  “When I left school at 16,” he says, “all my mates found jobs and I said, ‘I wouldn’t work for two grand a week at the jobs you lot are doing. Get up at seven, leave the kids, go to London, come back tired at eight, too knackered to enjoy the weekends with the kids and then do it again Monday to Friday.’ They said I was mad, but who’s wrong?” That’s it right there – the life of a gamble, the appeal, the freedom to come and go as you please.  Gamblers are a different breed.

“Lori Tells…”

A Session in the Life of a Low Stakes Casino Cash Grindin’ Girl

It’s another Friday night, and I head into work. My profession is a lil’ different than most.

While most of my friends are going on dates with their significant others, putting their

children to bed or watching TV and winding down from their workdays, I have closed

up shop in the lingerie business and ready for my night shift~poker. I play 40 hours or

more a week in my local casinos in Biloxi, Mississippi, and tonight is my usual “busy”night.

As I drive in, I try to prepare my mind for the battle against mostly recreational, inebriated,

touristy players. I steel myself for the constant babble of inexperienced players that we all

endure night after night, session after session in low stakes 1-3 NL tables. For me, however,

I endure a little more than most of my poker playing friends. There’s been a lot of talk

lately about women in poker. For all the belief that the game is the same for men and women,

I am here to tell you that it is most definitely NOT the same! Just in the course of one session,

I usually am bombarded with table talk that is purely chauvinistic.

What I hear? Let me give you a few examples just from the past 40 hours of play.

Donkey:

“This is the BIG boys’ game. Are you just killing time while you wait for

your husband?”

Lori’s brain:

“Yes, you certainly ARE a big boy! That’s great! You will have the mass

behind you to ship those chips faster in my direction.”

Donkey:

“Little lady, the poker table is no place for a sweetheart like you. Let’s go

somewhere nicer and we can play strip poker.”

Lori’s brain:

“I now know why you are here at 9 pm on a Friday night. With lines like that, you

are not likely to go out on any dates.”

Donkey:

“I fold. You must have it. No offense, but, honey, women don’t know how to

bluff. You will never be able to win in the end because of that. I will never pay

you off. No chips from me, baby!”

Lori’s Brain:

“ Are these imaginary chips that I am stacking? I’ve made you fold by the turn

to the tune of about 70 bbs by my calculations, but, what do I know? I’m just

a girl.”

Donkey:

(After he reraises me when the nut flush draw that I had been betting hits)

“Honey, I hit my card, just fold. I don’t wanna take your chips.”

Lori’s Brain:

“Donkey, EVERY card is your card! Just shove on me so I can snap you off, HONEY.”

As you can see, part of my job description is learning to tune this out, master my own mind-set, and make the most +EV decisions with every deal. It’s not online where I can

just shut off the chat , and sometimes, in spite of having to listen to these ignorant players,

I am happy to be in total control of the table texture.I am in my element, and as long as I know

this and they do not, I will win. as long as I am underestimated, I have a clear advantage.

Players, the next time you see a cute little thing sitting at your table, remember:

You just may be up against a female warrior.

‘Til next time, I wish you “rungood” , loose tables and most of all +EV from the felt

in Biloxi!

‘Dinsmore’

R. Scott Dinsmore is one of best contributors at High Roller Radio…here he has a brief correspondance with poker pro Dutch Boyd.

April 29, 2014
Interview with Dutch Boyd

RSD: How did you start playing poker on a professional level?

DB:  I had been sneaking into card rooms and playing online since I was 18, and loved playing. When I turned 21, I landed a job at Garden City in San Jose as a prop player. This would have been in 2002. A time-sheet and a schedule… that’s about as “professional” as it gets.

RSD:  What is your favorite poker game?

DB:  I like the mixed games… the 12/24 mixed game at Aria and the 8-game rotation on Stars.

RSD: Where is your favorite poker room?

DB:  In Vegas, the Aria is a beautiful room, but I think the Orleans treats their players better. My favorite live room was Gila River in Arizona… I think they changed the name, but they had so many great promotions. Online, I’d have to go with SealsWithClubs.eu… playing with bitcoin and getting cash outs the same day you request them is pretty awesome.

RSD:  What % do you play: Cash games ( 35% ) Tournaments ( 65% )

DB:  I’d be much better off if I just played cash games… tournaments are fluky and have a much lower hourly rate.

RSD:  What is your most memorable poker experience?

DB:  Ha… you don’t need to ask. You were there, bro! Taking down that first bracelet in front of the ESPN cameras, headsup with the former year’s champion after eliminating Negreanu in 8th (“spanking his ass” for the chiplead, lol).

RSD:  What is the most notable change you have seen in poker?

DB:  Well, the UIGEA and Black Friday made up the one-two punch that told us our government doesn’t want us making a career out of poker. It’s been sad watching pros have to relocate to play the game that they love. The game epitomizes everything that is good and bad about this country, and has such a deep history here. We have presidents who funded their political campaigns from poker winnings. Yet, it’s illegal to play Texas Hold’em in Texas or Omaha in Nebraska. The economy was crushed when the big sites left and I don’t think the US poker economy will ever get back to where it was before the UIGEA, even if we see interstate pacts.

Online War Wages On, Cops Raid a Seniors Game

Hey High Rollers, this week an online poker battle between one side, which badly wants it legalized, and the another, namely Sheldon Adelson, which doesn’t.  This is a war folks.  Plus…the authorities shut down a penny game at a seniors centre. Really?

<New Parlay Odds at BetOnline>

Online Poker Battle!

MGM & AGA back a new coalition designed to fight Sheldon Adelson anti-online gaming talks. Here’s a quote:

“This new entity is dedicated to creating a regulated Internet gaming marketplace and preventing a federal ban of online gaming. The coalition will operate exclusively at the federal level, encouraging Congress to embrace regulation as the best means to protect minors, detect money launderers and eliminate a dangerous black market.” – said AGA CEO Geoff Freeman.

Go get ’em guys!

Sheldon Adelson is on record suggesting he’ll spend whatever it takes to prevent the legalization of online poker. Well, a new coalition backed by the AGA and MGM has been formed to fight Adelson:

“A move to make all Internet gaming illegal is absurd on its face! That would remove all law enforcement oversight and permit the unregulated black market operators the ability to grow.”
– MGM Resorts Senior Vice President Alan Feldman.

Lori Tells… w/ Lori Kolstad, regarding Sheldon Adelson and his bid to fight online gaming:

“Yes, hard work of the Poker Players Alliance, poker players, and those that want to retain their freedom to choose what they do in their homes are being heard!! Sheldon Adelson, the donkey with the largest stack in the room, and we know what happens to donkeys? They rarely leave with any chips!”

Are you kidding me?

Washington shuts down a pennie card game…come’on man. ESPN The game’s been going on for 25 years at a seniors centre…here’s what one of the players said following the raid: (hilarious)

“If you gave them an IQ test, the needle wouldn’t move.”

Here’s what another one said: “We should turn the card rooms into grow rooms for marijuana. Then we would be legal and make some money. Maybe we could have free lunch!”

What is going on here?

Giving the Word FLUSH New Meaning

Hey High Rollers, have the patio door open enjoying the beautiful Southern California weather, and woking on the website.  Good news, two new sponsors have joined the fold and the NATION is growing, with 4 new members.  Found this interesting story on CNN this morning…a new meaning to the word – FLUSH!

<New Parlay Odds at BetOnline>

Talk about a FLUSH!

We’ve all heard the saying, “Throwing money down the drain,” One poker player gave new meaning to the saying “throwing money down the drain.” something I secretly say ager each crying call.  You been there?

Well,  Christian Lusardi, 42, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, flushed…literally flushed,  $2.7 million down the drain…2.7 million in counterfeit chips he was apparently using during the Borgata’s Winter Poker Open Big Stack No Limit Hold’em event.  Tournament officials became suspicious and found 160 fake poker chips, each worth $5000, for a stack of $800 grand…Lusardi flushed the chips down the toilet in a room at Harrah’s in Atlantic City.  Cops found them in clogged sewer pipes…the 42 year old was arrested…the tournament was suspended for 24 hours and eventually cancelled.

“A very unusual occurrence,” says Joe Lupo, senior VP of Operation at Borgata, “The first time in Borgata’s 10 years, anything like this has happened.” he adds.

Strange indeed, proving again, you just never know what you’re gonna find in the world of Gambling.

Jack McClelland, Vadim Trincher, Quote of Night, UFC 33, Greatest Fight in History?

Tribute to Jack McClelland:
After five decades as one of the world’s preeminent tournament directors, Jack McClelland, on December 6th, 2013, called it a career.  And what a career it was!  He first earned the TD title in 1984, at the Worl…d Series of Poker. He went on to run the Grand Prix of Poker at the Golden Nugget Casino.  McClelland was the first tournament director to host events at Commerce Casino in Southern California.  His resume includes international poker tournament in locales like the Isle of Man, St. Petersburg, Russia, Vienna, Cyprus and Aruba. For the past decade, McClelland has been running the tournaments at Bellagio, where he helped launch some of the earliest events on the World Poker Tour. He was there, at the helm, for the very first event of the WPT, in May of 2002.  His last event?  The 2013 WPT Five Diamond Doyle Brunson World Poker Classic.
Shuffle up and retire, right?

High Roller Radio Quote of the Night:

My grandmother taught me how to play, starting with two-cent ante, nickel-limit seven-card stud. I was kept broke until I was ten years old because I couldn’t throw a hand away (laughs). But I learned a lot about math playing poker.
– Jack McClelland

High Roller Radio Quote of the Day:

“When I was a kid, I thought that’s what big people did — you throw dice against the wall. That’s the way I was raised forever,” Bob Stupak said in the must-have biography by John Smith, No Limit: The Rise and Fall of Bob Stupak and Las Vegas’ Stratosphere Tower, referring to his parents to ran numbers and spread dice games.

StarCraft like drug addiction?

Some state officials in South Korea think play on computer games such as “StarCraft” — now in its second edition — has gotten so out of control that being obsessed with it should be classified as an illness, along with gambling and drug addictions.  What do you think?

WPT Star in Trouble

Legal troubles for World Poker Tour champion Vadim Trincher, whose admitted to being involved with an illegal sports betting operation that catered to wealthy bettors in the U.S. and Europe. Trincher’s business typically dealt with soccer matches.   He coul have spent decades in prison but thanks to a plea deal had that reduced to between 21 to 27 months in prison.  Trincher is 52 years old.

Did you know?  Lindsay Lohan has reportedly angered casino officials in Connecticut.  Management at Foxwoods not happy after paying the pop culture star a ridiculous $50,000 to judge a costume contest on Halloween.  She was supposed to be there at 10 p.m. and didn’t show until after midnight.  Lohan also skipped the red carpet festivities.  Foxwoods also paid Floyd Mayweather to be a judge and the boxing star was perfectly punctual.

UFC Fight Night 33

Spectacular night of fights in Australia, in particular the ehabvyweight clash between Antonio ‘BigFoot’ Silva and Marc Hunt!  Sick fight, a 5 round war for the ages, perhaps the greatest ther sport has ever seen.  It was a unanimous draw with one judge scoring it 48-47 for Hunt, and the other two having it tied at 47-47…wow.  They were both overjoyed with the outcome and Dana White rewarded them with ‘Fight of the Night’ honors and gave both their win bonuses.  Nicely done boys.

Chris De Beer – “Absolutely amazing fight! Undoubtedly the greatest heavyweight fight of all time – we have been treated to some classics the last few months.”
