Johnny Moss, Legend of the Game. Plus – GSP Wins?

Legend of the Game
Johnny Moss On January 25, 1971, a feature article, written by Edwin Shrake, on 3-time world champion Johnny Moss, appeared in Sports Illustrated.  The lengthy piece helped to shape the Johnny Moss legend.  In the articl…e, Moss told Shrake the games he found himself in, back in those days, were absolutely insane: “If you played a week you could win a million dollars, win it in a night if it shaped up right,” Johnny Moss recalls. “There were games, like at the old Metropolitan Hotel in Fort Worth, that nobody would believe the sums involved if I told you today. You got to be a good gambler, anyhow, to get rich in the oil business. Some of them players came out worth $40 million, what with poker and dice and oil leases and whatnot. Money didn’t mean nothing to them, but gambling did. Some of them big old-time oilmen still play in big poker games, but only for the pleasure of stepping on a professional gambler if they can. I like to see them come around.”

UFC 16-sham?  St.Pierre beats Hendricks according to judges only, wow!

Georges St-Pierre continues to rewrite the UFC record book:

His win over Johny Hendricks was a record 19th in the UFC for St-Pierre, moving him past Hall of Famer Matt Hughes at 18. It also extended his string of victories to 12, the longest current run in the UFC.  St-Pierre has not lost since his first title defence in April 7, 2007, when 10-1 underdog Matt (The Terror) Serra knocked him out three minutes 25 seconds into the first round at UFC 69 in Houston. Three fights later, at UFC 83 in April 2008, St-Pierre avenged the loss and won his title back.  The victory moved GSP past former middleweight champion Anderson Silva for most wins in UFC title bouts at 12.  Saturday’s win was GSP’s ninth successful title defence and ninth straight title defence, one behind Silva in each category. And it was his 14th championship fight, one behind Randy Travis Couture.

GSP’s a High Roller!

Intro:  16 pieces, paintings commissioned to sell cigars…in the early 1900’s…and today, they are still considered American treasures.  Surely you’ve seen them…Dogs Playing Poker…yeah, deal me in…today on High Roller Radio”

Body:  They’re the taste of the working man, home décor at its finest, a suitable and treasured piece in any man cave.  They were commissioned in 1903 by Brown and Bigelow as an advertising campaign to sell cigars…and what better way to push stogies than a collection of smoking and drinking k9’s?  American classics today, ‘Dogs Playing Poker’ is a series of 16 oil paintings by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge…oh and did Coolidge sell cigars…a ton of them.  The stogies faded…the oil did not..

The collection is a masterpiece really, I mean, what poker player, what art collector, what man, wouldn’t hang an original, or even a print, like I have, on the wall in the games room, overlooking the card table.  The collection comes complete with such names as New Year’s Eve in Dogville, Poker Sympathy, and Stranger in Camp.  ‘Pinched with Four Aces’, another apt name in the series…any poker player can relate to that.  CM Coolidge is playing in that great poker game in the sky now…he’s long passed…but his work will never be forgotten,  they have infiltrated the mainstream…have become a part of poker lore.

Now, a few of the compositions are modeled on paintings of human card-players by such artists as Caravaggio, Georges de La Tour, and Paul Cézanne.  A Bold Bluff, was originally titled ‘Judge St. Bernard Stands Pat on Nothing’ and Waterloo,  originally titled Judge St. Bernard wins on a bluff…that St. Bernard was owned by a Fifth Avenue florist and his name was Captain…great poker nickname right?  In 2005, the originals of A Bold Bluff and Waterloo were auctioned off as a pair…are you ready for this?  They sold for $590,400. Wow.  And when you think about it…is there anything better than cigars and dogs playing poker?  We give that credit to Cassius Marcellus Coolidge, today on HRR.

Waterloo, c. 1906

The titles in the “Dogs Playing Poker” series proper are:

A Bold Bluff (originally titled Judge St. Bernard Stands Pat on Nothing)[3]

Did you know?
A new report out of the London says that since the gambling industry in the United Kingdom was deregulated in ’07, television ads have jumped by an incredible 600%.  Roughly 234,000 spots aired in 2007, today that number is about 1.4 million. In 2007, deregulation ‘opened the door to TV advertising for sports betting, online casinos and poker.”

Marc Etienne McLaughlin Interview Notes

Hey High Rollers, had an excellent interview with Marc Etienne McLaughlin, 6th place finisher in the Main Event…the French-Canadian was having fun, leaping into the crowd every time he received a walk in the Big Blind…made a great comeback, but then suffered a bad beat and was eliminated in 6th.  Good friends with Jonathan Duhamel, 2010 world champ, and now good friends with High Roller NATION!

Marc Etienne McLaughlin

Hey High Rollers, you just watched him on television as part of the much heralded ‘November 9’…our guest today – a Canadian, who just enjoyed the biggest score of his young life, 1.6 ,million, ….but first, today’s chat brought to you by our friends at VegasopDogs.com, America’s #1 handicappers…they pick winners folks.

Alright, just had Steve Dannemann on the show, runner-up in  ’05…and he said he watched the final table and called it boring….there was only one guy having fun…the Canadian, Marc Etienne McLaughlin our guest today, from Quebec…good friends with 2010 world champ Jonathan Duhamel…Marc, welcome to show, thanks for being a High Roller…

Hey man, congratulations on your 6th place finish…I know you were hoping for more, you went in 3rd in chips I believe…the cards didn’t seem to be with you….how would you describe your final table experience?

What did you think of the outcome…Ryan Reiss, pretty much dominating Jay Farber heads-up…and then making a controversial remark, saying he feels like he is the best player in the world?  Twitter lit up, many feel he showed some disrespect to veterans of the game…guys who have won multiple bracelets, like Ivey, Hellmuth, Matusow?

During the telecast, your buddy Jonathan Duhamel was interviewed during one of the breaks…and I found it interesting, when he said your ‘rail’ was basically the same rail…the same people, that he had at  the Penn and Teller theatre three years ago when he won it all?  You guys are good friends?  Did you grow up together?

What type of guy is Jonathan?

How do you help each other with your games?

What comes to mind when I say the Montreal Canadiens?  How about the Toronto Maple Leafs?

You a George St. Pierre fan?  Did you watch the fight and, if so, do you think that was a good decision?

They were painted as an advertising tool to sell cigars. In 2007, 2 of the original paintings sold for $590,000. WOW. In Poker Parlance, I would be the Call-eee, lol.

UFC 167 – Controversial
CRAZY night of fights at UFC 167, the 20th anniversary show…George St. Pierre wins split decision but it was controversial to say the least…Johny Hendricks, not a mark on him, says “were they watching the same fight I was just in?”  St. Pierre then announced he ‘had to go away for a little while,” and it sounds like he’s retiring.  Wow.  Evans beats Sonnen, which lost us some money, and Lawlor topples MacDonald.

Grandma ‘Golden Arm’ – Roulette Ringer – Clocking the Wheel

Hey High Rollers, a couple fo interesting gambling tidbits for you today; the story of a New Jersey grandma who beat trillion-to-1 odds, roulette player who hit three times in a row at odds of more than 54,000-to-1…and what gamblers call ‘Clocking’ the wheel…great stuff!  Enjoy.

The Grandma who Beat Odds of a Trillion to 1?

We thank truecasinostories.com for this one.  It happened in 2009, May 23rd to be exact, at the Borgata in Atlantic City and it was sensational.  The greatest Craps roll ever.

Patricia Demauro, a grandmother from New Jersey, on her usual night out at the casino went on the roll of a lifetime.  Playing her favorite game, Craps, Demauro had the incredulous crowd in stitches and those at the table with her smiling as she went the lucky streak of a lifetime, shooting dice for, are you ready for this, four hours and 18 minutes before crapping out…that’s 154 rolls!  Wow.  She began with 100 bucks and kept rolling and rolling and while it’s unknown exactly how much she made you can bet those around her cashed in and big.  Fours hours 18 minutes…, it’s the longest roll in craps history and a feat that forced hotel management to break out the bubbly.

Now, the odds of throwing a 7 are 1 in 6, 1 in 7…doing it 157 straight times, without landing on the most common number when two dice are tossed, seven, is a trillion to one.

The previous best at the craps table was rolled by a man named Fujitake back in 1989…they called him Golden Arm…and every year since his famous roll, a club that sprang up, called the Golden Arm Club,  members gather to celebrate Fujitake and that legendary feat.

A grandma named Patricia and a man named Fujitake…history’s greatest Rollers, make that High Rollers, at the craps table today on High Roller Radio.

Lady Luck at Beau Rivage

At Beau Rivage Casino, a woman placed a $5 chip on #36 at the Roulette wheel and HIT the longshot at 38-to-1 (even though it pays 35-to-1) for $175.  She collected her money and left a $5 chip on the same number.  Unbelievably, when the ball stopped bouncing it landed on #36 again.  Wow.  She won another $175 with this deeper longshot, nailing the number twice in a row, at 1,400-to-1.  Again, she collected her money and left a $5 chip on what, by now, has to be her favorite number and, you guessed it, hit it again, for a third straight spin at odds of 54,872-to-1!  This time, she pocketed the $175 and called it a day.  Three in a row!  Now, that’s a High Roller.

Roulette Wheel Bias

Albert R. Hibbs, a noted mathematician, and fellow graduate Roy Walford, took time away from school and went to Nevada.  The year was 1949 and their aim was to study roulette wheel bias at casinos in Las Vegas and Reno.  Some roulette wheels are not properly balanced causing the ball to land in certain areas on the wheel more than others.  Hibbs and Walford were able to exploit that their mathematical “edge” to the tune of $42,000.

Note:  Nowadays, larger casinos avoid roulette wheel bias by recording every spin on a computer program, which analyzes the data and reports any bias to management.  The wheel is then serviced or replaced.

The Kidney Call?

Hey High Rollers, we love charitable efforts at High Roller Radio and we are continually surprised and delighted by the number of charity events and inspirational stories we see in  the world of poker and professional gambling. Came across this story the other day and decided to write our own version.  What a story.

Marc Etienne McLaughlin

Confirmed for show:  The 6th place finisher in the 2013 World Series of Poker main event, Marc Etienne McLaughlin, a Canadian and good friends with 2010 main event winner, world champion Jonathan Duhamel.  Can’t wait for our chat….he seemd to be the only one having fun at the final table with his leaps into the crowd, like the Lambeau Leap, everytime his big blind was given a ‘walk’…think he was trying to get something going…nearly did too…with a big double up but then his stack dwindled again.

The Kidney Call?
In putting together the website, I’ve learned a few things about myself; I’m creative, I’m dedicated and, surprisingly, I’m fairly patient and, in doing research on poker players, gambling legends and interesting characters of the game, I have also come to the conclusion that the poker community is caring and generous.  Each day, on facebook and twitter, I come across inspirationa…l stories, the kind that motivate you to do better.
The story of Krystal Seiling, one of only three women left in the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open Main Event, is one of those of those stories.
“I have plans for some money. My number one plan is that my boyfriend needs a new kidney. He has been battling some health problems. My mom, everyone knows I’m going to help him out and get him a kidney,” Seiling said while knocking on wood.
‘I figure I have a good cause going for me and hope the poker gods can smile on me for a little bit.” Yes, may the poker gods be with her.  At High Roller Radio, we call it the ‘High Roller Way!’  “I’m going to buy my mom a purse too, she needs a nice one.”
Good luck Krystal!

The Dannenmann Notes

Hey High Rollers,

Steve Dannenmann was a recent guest of the show; he was great.  The following is a subsequent story about the ’05 main event runner-up, by yours truly.  Enjoy.

Dannenmann’s Notes

By: Derrick Oliver-Dewan

The 2005 World Series of Poker main event final table will go down as one of the highest rated television shows in poker history.  Two of the game’s biggest stars were part of it and each had a healthy chip stack.  Andy Black, the eccentric Irishman, had a huge chip stack going into play but would eventually blow up, bluffing off his chips in quick and demoralizing fashion, and Mike Matusow, ‘The Mouth’, who watched in disbelief as his pocket King’s ran into the pocket Aces of Scott Lazaar on just the second hand of the final table.   In what has to be one of the most dramatic moments in WSOP history, Matusow clenched his teeth, pointed to the area of the table where the dealer would lay out the flop, and screamed, “KING!”  Voila.  The dealer turned the cards and there it was, that called-for King.  The problem?  The flop also contained two hearts and when the turn card brought another heart, Matusow and the entire room realized Lazar, a magician by trade, held the Ace of hearts and needed just one more symbol of love to perform his biggest trick ever, toppling the set of Kings of Matusow.  ‘The Mouth’ went suddenly silent and buried his head in the shoulder of friend as the dealer dealt the river card.  Bam!  Heart!  Lazar let out a primal scream, “Yes,” noting the ‘Best hand won.”  Marusow, visibly shaken, as if defeated in every sense of the word; physically, emotional, mentally, was crippled and out of the tournament a short time later.

“That was the SECOND hand,” Dannenman told me, emphasizing the word ‘Second’, expressing whole heartedly his disbelief such a massive pot would occur so early on in the evening’s proceedings.   Our interview was set up over facebook and I was excited to talk to him.  I mean, runner-up at the 2005 main event and, because of his character and that fact he was portrayed as a guy who really enjoyed his moment in the spotlight, one of the most recognizable faces in the game today.  He had fun, simple as that.  On ESPN, he came across as a guy you could have a beer with.  See, nowadays everyone’s wearing a hoodie or sunglasses.  One guy’s checking his iPad, another is typing something into his iPhone.  Too many ‘I’s in poker maybe?  The interview was underway and I wanted to know if he saw that as a problem, a detriment to the game?

“I was watching a bit of it last night,” he began, referring to the 2013 ‘November 9’, eventually won by a 23 year old out of Michigan named Ryan Reiss.  “It was BORING.  I mean, were any of these guys having fun?  Nobody was talking.  This should have been the time of their life.  If you spend $10,000 to enter a tournament, you know, to fulfill a dream and play at the World Series of Poker, that’s a lot of money.  Don’t you think you should have fun?  I get told a lot our final table in ’05 was one of the best ever, in terms of entertainment.  We were having fun.  And, when guys got knocked out we were hugging each other.  Hugging each other man.”

There was an interesting and revealing moment later on at the ’05 final, revealing in the sense it gave the viewer a sense of Dannenmann’s motivations and approach to his paly that night.  He had opened a pot for a raise holding Ace, 10, and was re-raised by Joe Hachem, the Australian chiropractor who would eventually be crowned world champion.  Hachem was holding Ace, Jack, a dominating hand over Dannemann’s.

“God, this would be a horrible call, this would be absolutely horrible.  I’ve played good cards all week long,” he said as he contemplated one of the biggest calls of his life.  “I gotta check something.”

Dannenmann reached into his pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper, which contained notes he had written to himself.

“My Notes,” he said, as he tried to iron out and flatten the paper, to make it readable.  “Number one; Have fun.  Number two; you have nothing to lose.  Number three; Play tight.”

Dannenman turned over the note and on the other side it said, “Not calling a raise is only a small mistake.”   As he read aloud that Number 4, ‘Not Calling a raise is only a small mistake,” he folded his hand much to the chagrin of Mr. Hachem.

“There should be a bumper stick that says, ‘Fold to the money baby.’ That’s what I did.  I kept finding reasons to fold.  I couldn’t out play them!  I mean, Matusow was bluffing me left, right and centre.  Every time someone got knocked out I made an extra $100,000, then it was $300,000 more.  Then, I was like, ‘Holy shit! That was a million dollar jump.’ I just kept finding reasons to fold.”

Steve Dannenman’s demeanor is a welcoming one; he’s always laughing, joking and smiling.  In 2005, he was presented with the opportunity of a lifetime – a chance to play at the main event final table and he took it, finding reasons to fold all the way to 2nd place and a whopping $4.2 million.  And, that’s money, as Dannemann says, “that won’t be going back into the poker community.”

It’s a great poker lesson, isn’t it?

  • Have Fun
  • You have nothing to lose
  • Play Tight
  • Not calling a raise is only a small mistake

Sarge Ferris – Legend of the Game

Hey High Rollers, heartbreaker today in the Arizona game, Cardinals (-3 1/2) was up by 10 late but gave up a touchdown….so, we go 1-and-2 on the weekend after we were perfect last weekend at 3-and-0…we are still up money, listening to our friends at VegasTopDogs.com.  Tony K and Chip Chirimbes a tad unlucky this weekend…but, we’ll make a strong comeback, next week, NFL Week #11.

Legend of the Game – Sarge Ferris

Intro: He was destitute as a child…the son of a Lebanese Immigrant…who grew up in Waterville, Maine during the Great Depression…his brother became a very successful watchmaker…but he, well, he became one of the greatest poker players of All-Time…a Hall of Famer…who never forgot where he came from…and his play, certainly reflected that.  The man they call “Sarge” today on HRR.

Hall of Famer, Poker Legend

Hall of Famer, Poker Legend

Body:  You could hardly call what Sarge Ferris did gambling.  He was the classic grinder…if his money was in, he had the goods.  Except, unlike, most…he grinding was for 6-figure scores…Read an article once where the legendary Jay Heimowitz, was quoted as saying, “he didn’t give away one crumb” That is a strong compliment from a six-time bracelet winner at the World Series of Poker.  Heimowitz adding Ferris never showed his cards, never gave away info…he was the consummate pro.”

Ferris played primarily cash games…a specialist they’d call him today…he only won one WSOP bracelet…did that at the 1980 series…beat Doyle Brunson, the games Godfather, heads-up to capture the $10,000 world championship od Deuce to 7 lowball.   After collecting his winnings, a cool $150,000, he decided to stake a young, brash, cocky kid….a guy nobody had ever heard of…oh, the poker world would eventually come to know this kid…very well…Sarge must have had a inkling…good players can spot other good players, right?  Right.  So, he ponied up the 10k for one Stu Ungar…and guess what?  Ungar won the world championship…also bettering Texas Dolly Doyle Brunson for the crown as world champ….good investment by Ferris…Ungar was a 100-1 longshot.  100-to-1…they weren’t that long the next year, I guarantee you that.  Ferris nearly died at the poker table…suffered a massive heart attack…his headstone is a poker table….Not everyone loved him, his funeral was well attended but one of those on hand was ‘Suitcase’ Sam Angel…Doyle Brunson said, “Why are you here? Everyone knows you and Sarge hated each other.”

“Yeah, I hated him, all right,” Angel replied, “I just want to make sure that c—sucker is dead.”

Later that year, 1989, he was posthumously inducted into Poker’s Hall of Fame…he was tight, but the way he played tight was right!  True Grinder… Legend of the game….Sarge Ferris…on High Roller Radio.

…speaking of the legendary Stu Ungar:

High Roller Radio Quote of the Day:

“Identify your opponents weaknesses.  Take advantage of every weakness they have, and exploit them every chance you get.”
Stu Ungar, from the book Poker Samadhi by Danielle Striker.

Hey High Rollers, Main Event Monday, as the World Series of Poker resumes play, here in Canada we’ll join the action an hour and a half late because of the hockey game, yes hokey is still more popular than poker in Canuck land.  JC Tran has the chip lead, Lon McEachern and Norman Chad at the mic…the world watching as the November 9 play for all the money – $8.5 million for 1st place.  WOW!  The Penn and Teller theatre will be rocking, no doubt, as each player, they’ve already received 9th place money, fly’s in their respective entourage’s.  The fans will be decked out in matching colours, blue for this guy, red for that one….it’s so fun and so exciting.  One thing to watch foe tonight is how the players react to each progressive pay jump…the money bubbles are enormous and they are playing foe life altering money.  Each jump in pay is staggering….some will be playing fo that while a few will be playing foe the world title….that group most certainly includes JC Tran.

Need to get in the mood?  3 great interviews for you at www.highrollerradio.netGreg Raymer, Tom McEvoy and Lon McEachern, simply click the ‘interviews’ tab.

One word – Unacceptable!!!!!

A mother and daughter were arrested after Hallandale Beach Police found five unsupervised children in a parked car at the Gulfstream Casino.

Angela Pond, 37, and Esharia Pond, 21, were each charged with five counts of child neglect after a Gulfstream security guard found the children, ranging from 1 to 11 years of age, inside a car parked in the south lot, according to Hallandale Beach Police.

(Folks, please gambling responsibly and w/ common sense.  Your kids are more important than a slot machine, or even our website, lol…Please don’t let the next story like this be about you.  Cheers)

….from Card Player magazine: A woman who won a $1-million prize in a promotion at an Oregon tribal casino is suing the firm who insured it for stiffing her on her seven-figure payout, according to KGW.  In 2012, Beverly Mackey, who currently lives off of disability and social security payments and a small pension, hit the grand prize in the Chinook Winds Casino’s “Swipe, Play & Win” promotion. … To her devastation, the insurer of the contest, Nevada-based Odds On Promotions, reportedly refused to pay, claiming that it had made a terrible blunder. It said a company technician put the odds of a $1-million prize far too low. In other words, that the hit was illegitimate
(We hope the judge makes them pay big time.  A win is a win!)

Good poker players who say snarky remarks at plays beginners make need to shut the hell up. There was a time that was you.
(Nicely done Kristy, we agree.  Be nice to them, “good hand,” and keep’em at the table.  I’ve seen a so-called good player get upset at a recreational player, mother of 4, and she got up, put the chips in her rack and left.  Nice job buddy!)
