WSOP Trophy?

Bracelets have not always been awarded for winning events. In 1970, the first WSOP Champion received nothing but a silver cup and whatever cash he won during the event. From 1971–1974, the winner received an undescribed “corny trophy”. In 1975, the winners received a sterling plate. The following year, 1976, the WSOP started the tradition of issuing bracelets to the event winners.

Pascal LeFrancois is a super likeable guy.  He’s young, polite and Canadian.  A typical Frenchman, who likes to root for his beloved Montreal Canadiens’, one of the National Hockey League’s original six teams, LeFranscois proudly, dawns his ‘Habs’ jersey wherever and whenever he can.  In fact, often times you’ll see him sporting his team’s colors at the poker table.   In 2010, Le Franscois had a break-out year!  At the World Series of Poker, he managed to win Event #8, a $1500 buy-in with a ruthlessly large and talented field and collect more than half-a-million dollars.  Then, at the main event, LeFrancois finished 11th for more than $600,000.  A couple of weeks work and more than $1.1 million to show for it!  Pretty good gig if you can get it. To follow that success, and prove in the process he wasn’t a one-trick pony, LeFrancois finished second in Montreal, at the 2012 World Poker Tour main event for close to $500,000.  This guy is good.

Jeopardy Champ a Student of Game Theory

Jeopardy/Game Theory Expert
Arthur Chu, a 30-year-old voice actor, won more than $100,000 in four appearances on the CBS game show Jeopardy.  Chu actively sought out Daily Double’s and abandoned conventional play by starting with the larger dollar values and working his way ‘up’ the board instead of the lowly $100 categories.  Some fans of the show were offended by his style while others praised his apparent understanding of Game Theory and concepts often employed in poker.  Here’s what this trivia whiz had to say about his approach:

“Back ion the day everybody kept their money.  It was like a cash game in poker. Once you’ve gotten enough money, why risk more money? Why make a big bet? If I know I’ve got $18,000 in the bank and someone’s like, “Hey, want to bet $8,000 that you know the answer to this question?” No. Why would I do that? Am I a gambling addict? Am I stupid?  In order to encourage big bets, Jeopardy! is now winner-take-all. Only the person in first place keeps their total at the end of the game. Everyone else gets the consolation prize. If you have $20,000 and someone else has $20,001, you get second prize, which is $2,000. If you are in third place and the two other players have $5 more than you, no matter how much money you have, you take home $1,000. There’s a very powerful incentive to be aggressive. You really do need to make sure you win the game. The most important thing isn’t the absolute number of dollars you have on the board. It’s how strongly you’re beating the other players. How far ahead are you? What’s the spread?”

“Sports betting is all about money management, so the most money won on one event is not the most important thing.”
— Bruce Dern

Philip Gruissem
Young German Pro won $4.5 million in 2013 and here he talks about one of his main motivations of late – CHARITY:

“After I had player poker nonstop for four or five years I got the point where my motivation got lost and it got boring. I thought, ‘Why am I doing this? I have a little bit of money in the bank, but why else am I doing this?’ That sucks. So I was thinking about what to do and I decided that I should try to be an effective altruist, somebody who thinks how he can help other people most effectively. I came to the conclusion that the thing I could do best right now is playing poker, that’s my skill. So if I give a 10 percent piece of my earnings to charity, the better I play the more money I can make and the more impact I can have. So that is a big motivation for me, when playing poker isn’t always fun, I get back on track and stay motivated through that.”
– Q&A w/ Card Player magazine

“The one who bets the most wins. Cards just break ties.”
– Sammy Farha

“If an opponent won’t watch you bet, then you probably shouldn’t.”
– Mike Caro
The Mad Genius of Poker

“Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more you sweat, the luckier you get.”
– Ray Kroc

“A funny thing happens when you shoot for the moon, you get there!”
– Cadillac, new commercial.

“In the game of life, the house edge is called time. In whatever we do, nature charges us for doing it in the currency of time. So we must take advantage of every moment. Every moment in life is so very precious.  You only get a fling at life for a while, then the house collects. We must get all our thrills and all our experiences while we have the opportunity. We have to go for it now! And only by taking advantage of time in this way can we get the best of it – win or lose.”
– Bob Stupak

Hey High Rollers, apologies for not posting in a while. I have been enjoying the sunshine in beautiful sunny Southern California, visiting my sister and playing cards at the legendary Commerce Casino. Stayed 8 nights, 5 and 3, and won big the first go around, lost big the next. That’s poker as they say. Disappointed because admittedly I did play poorly on my second visit.

The site is going great, signed two more advertisers today. Great news. If you or your company would like to place an ad at www.highrollerradio.net send me an email at derrick@highrollerradio.net, we offer great packages, will meet your budget and provide you a ton of extras.

“Lori Tells…” on High Roller Radio:

Responding to a recent experience I wrote about, regarding players bad attitudes toward dealers, ‘Blaming’ them for their misfortune. Lori writes:

Lori wrote: “This is a pet peeve of mine, Derrick! Most of the closest people in my circle of friends work in the casino industry, and it makes me LIVID when players do this! I try very hard not to react with the same bad attitude they have, but I wear em down from thatmoment on with bets and table talk meant to make them uncomfortable…eventually, you catch a hand where they pay you off and you can then berate them about how badly they playesd the hand “

The FedEx Gamble

Frederick W. Smith, Founder of FedEx wagered it all at the blackjack table and saved the company.

It’s one of the biggest brands in the world but it wouldn’t be if not for the risky play of its founder and CEO.  More than 40 years ago, 1971, Frederick W. Smith, invested his own fortune, somewhere in the area of $4 million, and an additional $90 million in capital to start an unknown delivery company designed to change to world by allowing people and businesses to ship overnight anywhere in the world.  At the time, it was a unique service that nobody else was offering, a grand idea.  Just three years in the business was in trouble – a lot of trouble.  Rising fuel costs put the company on the brink of bankruptcy.  Losses amounted to more than $1 million a month.  At its lowest, FedEx had a measly $5,000 in the bank account, not nearly enough to fuel the planes come the new work week Monday, so Smith, in desperation cancelled his usual flight home to Memphis and, instead, jetted off to Las Vegas and too the company’s entire bankroll along for the ride.  Talk about a gamble!  Smith, silently and discreetly, headed to the blackjack tables in an effort, a last ditch, perhaps crazy bid, to not only beat the house but save the company in the process. The Gambling Gods must have needed overnight service because by Monday morning the company bank account indicated FedEx had 32-grand sitting there, just enough to gas the planes and keep the entire operation afloat for a few more days.  BY 1976, the company showed its first profit, $3.6 million, and just four years later it made $40 million.  Today, FedEx is reportedly worth between $25 and $35 billion.  When his own management asked what he was thinking, risking company funds to play blackjack, Smith replied, “it didn’t make a difference because without the money for fuel for the planes the company couldn’t have flown anyway.”

It’s a small risk considering the whopping, long-term, payoff.  You gotta take a shot baby!

Bad Beat story on this fine Monday:

High Roller NATION has $100 on Cowboys to cover 6-and-a-half…looking good at half with a 23 point lead….come out and run the ball right? Kill some time? Nope. Two or three three and outs….and all of a sudden the GREEN BAY QB looks like Joe Montana…and the Cowboys defence looks like Alan Bester (the old leafs goalie – a ‘Sieve’) Come’on MAN!!!!

ATTENTION High Rollers:

Next draw is January 15th, for a copy of Poker Samadhi, fantastic new offering from Danielle Striker, poker player, former Broadway dancer and guru at Poker Samadhi in Las Vegas. Live Mis-Click

Playing electronic poker at OLG London on Thursday, with $560 in front of me, was faced with a raise on a flop of 2, 6, 8, and holding the 4,5 in the big blind….love double gutter’s…there was 20 bucks in the pot pre-flop…I led out for $14 and got two callers before a guy jacked it up to $80….In electronic poker you have 45 seconds to act….I gave him a sweat and with time running out went… to hit ‘FOLD’ and ‘CONFIRM’…but accidentally hit ‘ALL-IN’ and before I realized it hit ‘CONFIRM’….yikes. Thank-fully for me, my time ran out and my cards were automatically folded. Could have been a huge blunder. I asked the guy…’Would you have called my all-in?” “yes,” he said, “I hit everything on that flop, top pair and nut flush draw. Now, he did get a caller and the turn completed my straight (a 7) but it was a club and gave the raiser the nuts.

Talk about a LIVE mis-click. Thank goodness I didn’t have 46 seconds.

Hey High Rollers, how are ya doing?  The snow’s flying where I’m at….gonna be a white Christmas here…Hope the Reindeer’s dress warm….today’s chat brought to you by our good friends atVegasTopDogs.com….Tony K and company, they  pick winners folks…

Alright, I want to read you a few quotes…”I’m not a prodigy, I just work at every poker hand.” Phil Ivey.  “Put yourself in a position to get lucky.”  Tom McEvoy, the 1983 world champ and former guest of this show.  “Patience is the companion of wisdom.”  Saint Augustine.  And, “No Limit Hold’em is 70% psychological, 20% mathematical and 10% magical,” that quote comes to us from our guest today, author of a fantastic new book called Poker Samadhi, designed to help you reach a new level of consciousness at the poker table….its all about divine energy and spirit baby.  She’s the founder and chief guru of Poker Samadhi, located in Las Vegas Nevada….Danielle Striker our guest today…Danielle, good to have you, thanks for being a High Roller…

Thank-you so much for the book…I just love it, keep it at my bedside.  Now,  I know a little bit about your story, a New Yorker, a Broadway dancer, motorcycle nut and now poker crazy…you had a very serious motorbike accident, can you tells us about that…

You write, “and then I had an epiphany, I realized the game of poker was a symbolic representation of life.  The way people play poker and live their lives are the same.”  I love that line…can you elaborate for us?

Poker Samadhi, it’s a way of life for you isn’t it?

In the dedication, you say that your dad taught you that “You are where your attention is.”  That’s dynamite stuff.

I listened to a Phil Hellmuth interview years ago, where he said its absolutely vital to be in the right head-space when you play…citing an example of How an alcoholic, deep down, may feel like he/or/she deserves to lose and therefore does…poker players put in crazy hours…crazy things happen, you make take a bad beat, the guy beside you may smell bad, talk too much…and you’re playing for cash, in some cases for a living and you need to keep your head right?  you need to think straight..with so many variables that can be tough?

70% psychological, 20% mathematical, and 10 per cent magical?

You have a close relationship with former guest of the show Tom McEvoy, world champion, author, very impressive man…how did that relationship develop?
What has he taught you about the game of poker…aside from basic strategy…the life part of it?

You guys have some big plans in 2004?

What are some common mistakes you think people make at the poker table because they’re not fully in tune with themselves…bankroll management, I assume is one of them?

In the book, you have quoted some of the games very best, some of them legends..Stu Ungar, show me a good loser and i’ll show you a loser…what was the process in selecting these quotes, was there a criteria?

The interview is slated for later today…stay tuned, Danielle Striker, a good friend of the show, on HRR>

The American Gaming Association (AGA) has responded to Sheldon Adelson’s Anti-web-poker campaign.  Adelson, the woner of the Las Vegas Sands essentially wants to prohibit online poker in any form in the United States.
The AGA said in a statement:
“Time and again, government efforts to prohibit use of everyday products have failed. In 2012, Americans spent nearly $3 billion gambling with rogue of…fshore operators. The Internet cannot be forced back into the bottle — nor can market demand. We support pragmatism and strong regulation of online gaming that protects consumers, prevents underage play, ensures the integrity of the games and empowers law enforcement. New government efforts to prohibit online gaming will unintentionally strengthen black market providers, create more risk for American consumers, including children, and drive U.S. jobs and potential revenues overseas. We appreciate divergent viewpoints and welcome a healthy discussion on this complex issue.”
We have interviewed Judy Patterson, vice-president of the AGA, on HRR…INTERVIEWS tab, enjoy.

Marc Etienne McLaughlin Interview Notes

Hey High Rollers, had an excellent interview with Marc Etienne McLaughlin, 6th place finisher in the Main Event…the French-Canadian was having fun, leaping into the crowd every time he received a walk in the Big Blind…made a great comeback, but then suffered a bad beat and was eliminated in 6th.  Good friends with Jonathan Duhamel, 2010 world champ, and now good friends with High Roller NATION!

Marc Etienne McLaughlin

Hey High Rollers, you just watched him on television as part of the much heralded ‘November 9’…our guest today – a Canadian, who just enjoyed the biggest score of his young life, 1.6 ,million, ….but first, today’s chat brought to you by our friends at VegasopDogs.com, America’s #1 handicappers…they pick winners folks.

Alright, just had Steve Dannemann on the show, runner-up in  ’05…and he said he watched the final table and called it boring….there was only one guy having fun…the Canadian, Marc Etienne McLaughlin our guest today, from Quebec…good friends with 2010 world champ Jonathan Duhamel…Marc, welcome to show, thanks for being a High Roller…

Hey man, congratulations on your 6th place finish…I know you were hoping for more, you went in 3rd in chips I believe…the cards didn’t seem to be with you….how would you describe your final table experience?

What did you think of the outcome…Ryan Reiss, pretty much dominating Jay Farber heads-up…and then making a controversial remark, saying he feels like he is the best player in the world?  Twitter lit up, many feel he showed some disrespect to veterans of the game…guys who have won multiple bracelets, like Ivey, Hellmuth, Matusow?

During the telecast, your buddy Jonathan Duhamel was interviewed during one of the breaks…and I found it interesting, when he said your ‘rail’ was basically the same rail…the same people, that he had at  the Penn and Teller theatre three years ago when he won it all?  You guys are good friends?  Did you grow up together?

What type of guy is Jonathan?

How do you help each other with your games?

What comes to mind when I say the Montreal Canadiens?  How about the Toronto Maple Leafs?

You a George St. Pierre fan?  Did you watch the fight and, if so, do you think that was a good decision?

Marc Etienne Mclaughlin…listen to full interview at www.highrollerradio.net

True story, happened back in 1960, O’Connor was a dealer at the Golden Nugget.  O’Connor has written a couple of books, Tales of Old Las Vegas and How to Dominate $1 and $2 No Limit Hold’em.

Did you know?  Actor Eric Bruskotter, star of the movies Major League 2 & 3 and Dragon: the Bruce Lee Story, is an avid poker player and a regular at the Commerce Casino in Las Vegas.  Bruskotter doesn’t play in any Hollywood home games because he thinks they’re “lame”.

Did you know?  The Dogs Playing Poker painting series by Cassius Mracellus Coolidge, in the late 1800’s, consists of 16 different paintings (check out cover photo). They were painted as an advertising tool to sell cigars. In 2007, 2 of the original paintings sold for $590,000. WOW. In Poker Parlance, I would be the Call-eee, lol.

Did you know?  Dominic ‘The Dominator” LoRiggio teamed up with Frank Scoblete, another professional craps shooter whose authored several books on the subject, including Golden Touch Craps, and over the years the pair made hundreds of thousands of dollars together.  While Scoblete is one of the world’s leading authorities on dice throwing, he admits it was LoRiggio who had the golden arm and The Golden Touch.  Think about this; the odds of rolling a seven are 1 in 6.  LoRiggio once went on a 53 minute roll without crapping out, earning him $27,000 in the process.

Check out our Dominic LoRiggio feature under FEATURES tab at www.highrollerradio.net also under INTERVIEWS tab for Eric Bruskotter, of Major League 2 & 3 fame….great Q&A’s.

UFC 167 – Controversial
CRAZY night of fights at UFC 167, the 20th anniversary show…George St. Pierre wins split decision but it was controversial to say the least…Johny Hendricks, not a mark on him, says “were they watching the same fight I was just in?”  St. Pierre then announced he ‘had to go away for a little while,” and it sounds like he’s retiring.  Wow.  Evans beats Sonnen, which lost us some money, and Lawlor topples MacDonald.

Odds; for the AMERICAN Presidency in 2016 & Retweeted by Doyle Brunson

Hey High Rollers, came across an article today on the race for the White House in 2016, a betting site across the pond has laid odds on the various candidates.  Great stuff.  Check it out;

Clinton in 2016?

Americans are still three years away from heading to the polls, but that isn’t stopping gamblers worldwide from seeking ‘action’ on the US presidential election.  Who will succeed Barack Obama in the White House in 2016? That’s the question, and William Hill, a major poker, casino and betting site out of the United Kingdom, thinks it has the answer – Hillary Clinton.

Already, a customer in London, England, has wagered a $2,400 on the former Secretary of State at odds of 5-to-2.  It’s the largest bet on the presidential race so far.  William Hill has since lowered the odds to 2-to-1, making Bill’s wife and Chelsea’s mother the odds-on favorite to become Commander and Chief, and the first woman ever to hold the oval office.

“This bet on Hillary Clinton, together with a run of support for (New Jersey Gov.) Chris Christie, reducing his odds from 20-1 to 10-1, seems to signal the presidential race coming under starter’s orders as far as political punters are concerned,” William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said.

Betting on the presidency?  Another sign, perhaps, of how widespread and mainstream gambling has become.  How accepted too.

Odds for the US presidency in 2016?
As of Monday, November 11th, Remembrance Day, lest we forget, they were: Clinton, 2-1; Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., 6-1; former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, 9-1; Chris Christie, 10-1; New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, 12-1; and Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., 16-1.
William Hill said Democrats and Republicans are tied at odds of 10-11 to win the election, while it’s 100-1 for an independent candidate.
At Ladbrokes, Clinton also is the early favorite at 9-4, with Christie the Republican favorite at 10-1. Paddy Power has Clinton at 15-8, followed by Christie at 9-1. Looking for a long shot? Paddy Power has actors Alec Baldwin and Eva Longoria each at 300-1.  Betting on U.S. elections is big business for bookmakers in Europe, but it remains illegal in Nevada.
Did you know? William Hill took in more than $1.59 million in wagers on the 2012 election, while Paddy Power put its election bets at $1.6 million.
