Clinton in 2016?

Americans are still three years away from heading to the polls, but that isn’t stopping gamblers worldwide from seeking ‘action’ on the US presidential election.  Who will succeed Barack Obama in the White House in 2016? That’s the question, and William Hill, a major poker, casino and betting site out of the United Kingdom, thinks it has the answer – Hillary Clinton.

Already, a customer in London, England, has wagered a $2,400 on the former Secretary of State at odds of 5-to-2.  It’s the largest bet on the presidential race so far.  William Hill has since lowered the odds to 2-to-1, making Bill’s wife and Chelsea’s mother the odds-on favorite to become Commander and Chief, and the first woman ever to hold the oval office.

“This bet on Hillary Clinton, together with a run of support for (New Jersey Gov.) Chris Christie, reducing his odds from 20-1 to 10-1, seems to signal the presidential race coming under starter’s orders as far as political punters are concerned,” William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said.

Betting on the presidency?  Another sign, perhaps, of how widespread and mainstream gambling has become.  How accepted too.

Odds for the US presidency in 2016?
As of Monday, November 11th, Remembrance Day, lest we forget, they were: Clinton, 2-1; Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., 6-1; former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, 9-1; Chris Christie, 10-1; New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, 12-1; and Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., 16-1.
William Hill said Democrats and Republicans are tied at odds of 10-11 to win the election, while it’s 100-1 for an independent candidate.
At Ladbrokes, Clinton also is the early favorite at 9-4, with Christie the Republican favorite at 10-1. Paddy Power has Clinton at 15-8, followed by Christie at 9-1. Looking for a long shot? Paddy Power has actors Alec Baldwin and Eva Longoria each at 300-1.  Betting on U.S. elections is big business for bookmakers in Europe, but it remains illegal in Nevada.
Did you know? William Hill took in more than $1.59 million in wagers on the 2012 election, while Paddy Power put its election bets at $1.6 million.

Did you know?  The first woman to win a WSOP event was Jackie McDaniels, who won the ladies event at the 1977 WSOP, the first year it was offered. That event also makes WSOP history as the smallest buy-in of $100, with McDaniel claiming $5,580 for her win in the Ladies Limit 7 Card Stud tournament.
Did you know?  Barbara Enright is frequently referred to as the first woman to win a WSOP bracelet in an open field event (in which anyone, man or woman can play) for her win in 1996 in the $2,500 Hold’em Pot Limit event (with an amazing three woman making that final table as Lucy Rokach finished 3rd and Jennifer Harman finished 6th) when she outlasted a field of 180 total runners.   The only problem is that Vera Richmond beat her to the punch by about 13 years, with Richmond winning the $1,000 Limit Ace to Five Draw event at the 1982 WSOP, topping a field of 77 players.
Did you know?  Doyle Brunson and Starla Brodie won  the 1979 Mixed Doubles 7 Card Stud event and each received the princely sum of $4,500 each, the smallest amount a WSOP winner has ever received. Did you know?  As far as the smallest amount a winner has gotten for a “normal” WSOP event, that dubious honor goes to Bones Berland, who won $6,300 for his win in a Limit Razz event in 1977.

The NATION

Great post from our newest member of High Roller NATION!!!!
Dennis L Hubbard :  My dad knew Russ Hamilton back in the late 70’s / early 80’s. Russ ran some games back then while working with my dad at a local grocery store. He was not surprised at how Russ ended up in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. He told me about him when my interest in poker was sparked by the Moneymaker mania.

The dealer, stone-faced, replied, ”Is that a fold?” Too funny.

Greatest Bookie Ever? Sonny Reisner

Sonny Reisner put up odds on who shot J.R. from the hit series Dallas

Sonny Reisner put up odds on who shot J.R. from the hit series Dallas

The Greatest Bookie Ever?

Sonny Reizner, who some consider the greatest bookie ever, is the man most often given credit to starting the proposition betting craze in Las Vegas.  Flashback to 1980, sports books are just emerging as respectable institutions, Reisner, who ran a small hole-in-the-wall betting joint called the Castaways, was able to grab international headlines by hanging odds on who shot J.R.

The television drama Dallas was the number 1 show back in ’80, it had huge ratings, and Reisner was able to capitalize on its popularity by placing the odds.  He even listed Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry and quarterback Roger Staubach as two suspects.  J.R., an evil oil baron, had been gunned down and America seemed entranced in the ongoing whodunit.  People flocked into the Castaways to place bets.  State gaming officials were not impressed and forced Reisner to take the bet off the books and eventually passed a law where proposition bets could only be made on sporting events.

Reisner was quite a bookmaker, an original who was the first to offer large point spreads on football games, the first to offer special Super Bowl and Monday night parlays and the first to accommodate the media.  He was ahead of his time.   Sonny Reisner died of Parkinson’s in 1981.

Tidbit:  Reisner had a sense of humor too; once when asked about his time in the military, he said, “when I went into the service the Germans became 8-to-5 favorites.”

Did you know? Reisner readily admitted his gambling career began in the bleachers of Fenway Park in the 1930s.

Tidbit #2:  A bet on Kristen Sheppard would have won the J.R. bet; she was his sister-in-law and ex-lover.
