Grandma ‘Golden Arm’ – Roulette Ringer – Clocking the Wheel

Hey High Rollers, a couple fo interesting gambling tidbits for you today; the story of a New Jersey grandma who beat trillion-to-1 odds, roulette player who hit three times in a row at odds of more than 54,000-to-1…and what gamblers call ‘Clocking’ the wheel…great stuff!  Enjoy.

The Grandma who Beat Odds of a Trillion to 1?

www.highrollerradio.net

We thank truecasinostories.com for this one.  It happened in 2009, May 23rd to be exact, at the Borgata in Atlantic City and it was sensational.  The greatest Craps roll ever.

Patricia Demauro, a grandmother from New Jersey, on her usual night out at the casino went on the roll of a lifetime.  Playing her favorite game, Craps, Demauro had the incredulous crowd in stitches and those at the table with her smiling as she went the lucky streak of a lifetime, shooting dice for, are you ready for this, four hours and 18 minutes before crapping out…that’s 154 rolls!  Wow.  She began with 100 bucks and kept rolling and rolling and while it’s unknown exactly how much she made you can bet those around her cashed in and big.  Fours hours 18 minutes…, it’s the longest roll in craps history and a feat that forced hotel management to break out the bubbly.

Now, the odds of throwing a 7 are 1 in 6, 1 in 7…doing it 157 straight times, without landing on the most common number when two dice are tossed, seven, is a trillion to one.

The previous best at the craps table was rolled by a man named Fujitake back in 1989…they called him Golden Arm…and every year since his famous roll, a club that sprang up, called the Golden Arm Club,  members gather to celebrate Fujitake and that legendary feat.

A grandma named Patricia and a man named Fujitake…history’s greatest Rollers, make that High Rollers, at the craps table today on High Roller Radio.

Lady Luck at Beau Rivage

At Beau Rivage Casino, a woman placed a $5 chip on #36 at the Roulette wheel and HIT the longshot at 38-to-1 (even though it pays 35-to-1) for $175.  She collected her money and left a $5 chip on the same number.  Unbelievably, when the ball stopped bouncing it landed on #36 again.  Wow.  She won another $175 with this deeper longshot, nailing the number twice in a row, at 1,400-to-1.  Again, she collected her money and left a $5 chip on what, by now, has to be her favorite number and, you guessed it, hit it again, for a third straight spin at odds of 54,872-to-1!  This time, she pocketed the $175 and called it a day.  Three in a row!  Now, that’s a High Roller.

Roulette Wheel Bias

Albert R. Hibbs, a noted mathematician, and fellow graduate Roy Walford, took time away from school and went to Nevada.  The year was 1949 and their aim was to study roulette wheel bias at casinos in Las Vegas and Reno.  Some roulette wheels are not properly balanced causing the ball to land in certain areas on the wheel more than others.  Hibbs and Walford were able to exploit that their mathematical “edge” to the tune of $42,000.

Note:  Nowadays, larger casinos avoid roulette wheel bias by recording every spin on a computer program, which analyzes the data and reports any bias to management.  The wheel is then serviced or replaced.

The Dannenmann Notes

Hey High Rollers,

Steve Dannenmann was a recent guest of the show; he was great.  The following is a subsequent story about the ’05 main event runner-up, by yours truly.  Enjoy.

Dannenmann’s Notes

By: Derrick Oliver-Dewan

The 2005 World Series of Poker main event final table will go down as one of the highest rated television shows in poker history.  Two of the game’s biggest stars were part of it and each had a healthy chip stack.  Andy Black, the eccentric Irishman, had a huge chip stack going into play but would eventually blow up, bluffing off his chips in quick and demoralizing fashion, and Mike Matusow, ‘The Mouth’, who watched in disbelief as his pocket King’s ran into the pocket Aces of Scott Lazaar on just the second hand of the final table.   In what has to be one of the most dramatic moments in WSOP history, Matusow clenched his teeth, pointed to the area of the table where the dealer would lay out the flop, and screamed, “KING!”  Voila.  The dealer turned the cards and there it was, that called-for King.  The problem?  The flop also contained two hearts and when the turn card brought another heart, Matusow and the entire room realized Lazar, a magician by trade, held the Ace of hearts and needed just one more symbol of love to perform his biggest trick ever, toppling the set of Kings of Matusow.  ‘The Mouth’ went suddenly silent and buried his head in the shoulder of friend as the dealer dealt the river card.  Bam!  Heart!  Lazar let out a primal scream, “Yes,” noting the ‘Best hand won.”  Marusow, visibly shaken, as if defeated in every sense of the word; physically, emotional, mentally, was crippled and out of the tournament a short time later.

“That was the SECOND hand,” Dannenman told me, emphasizing the word ‘Second’, expressing whole heartedly his disbelief such a massive pot would occur so early on in the evening’s proceedings.   Our interview was set up over facebook and I was excited to talk to him.  I mean, runner-up at the 2005 main event and, because of his character and that fact he was portrayed as a guy who really enjoyed his moment in the spotlight, one of the most recognizable faces in the game today.  He had fun, simple as that.  On ESPN, he came across as a guy you could have a beer with.  See, nowadays everyone’s wearing a hoodie or sunglasses.  One guy’s checking his iPad, another is typing something into his iPhone.  Too many ‘I’s in poker maybe?  The interview was underway and I wanted to know if he saw that as a problem, a detriment to the game?

“I was watching a bit of it last night,” he began, referring to the 2013 ‘November 9’, eventually won by a 23 year old out of Michigan named Ryan Reiss.  “It was BORING.  I mean, were any of these guys having fun?  Nobody was talking.  This should have been the time of their life.  If you spend $10,000 to enter a tournament, you know, to fulfill a dream and play at the World Series of Poker, that’s a lot of money.  Don’t you think you should have fun?  I get told a lot our final table in ’05 was one of the best ever, in terms of entertainment.  We were having fun.  And, when guys got knocked out we were hugging each other.  Hugging each other man.”

There was an interesting and revealing moment later on at the ’05 final, revealing in the sense it gave the viewer a sense of Dannenmann’s motivations and approach to his paly that night.  He had opened a pot for a raise holding Ace, 10, and was re-raised by Joe Hachem, the Australian chiropractor who would eventually be crowned world champion.  Hachem was holding Ace, Jack, a dominating hand over Dannemann’s.

“God, this would be a horrible call, this would be absolutely horrible.  I’ve played good cards all week long,” he said as he contemplated one of the biggest calls of his life.  “I gotta check something.”

Dannenmann reached into his pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper, which contained notes he had written to himself.

“My Notes,” he said, as he tried to iron out and flatten the paper, to make it readable.  “Number one; Have fun.  Number two; you have nothing to lose.  Number three; Play tight.”

Dannenman turned over the note and on the other side it said, “Not calling a raise is only a small mistake.”   As he read aloud that Number 4, ‘Not Calling a raise is only a small mistake,” he folded his hand much to the chagrin of Mr. Hachem.

“There should be a bumper stick that says, ‘Fold to the money baby.’ That’s what I did.  I kept finding reasons to fold.  I couldn’t out play them!  I mean, Matusow was bluffing me left, right and centre.  Every time someone got knocked out I made an extra $100,000, then it was $300,000 more.  Then, I was like, ‘Holy shit! That was a million dollar jump.’ I just kept finding reasons to fold.”

Steve Dannenman’s demeanor is a welcoming one; he’s always laughing, joking and smiling.  In 2005, he was presented with the opportunity of a lifetime – a chance to play at the main event final table and he took it, finding reasons to fold all the way to 2nd place and a whopping $4.2 million.  And, that’s money, as Dannemann says, “that won’t be going back into the poker community.”

It’s a great poker lesson, isn’t it?

  • Have Fun
  • You have nothing to lose
  • Play Tight
  • Not calling a raise is only a small mistake

Tom McEvoy & Greg Raymer – Interview Notes

Hey High Rollers, couple of world champions on the show recently, 2004’s Greg Raymer & 1983’s Tom McEvoy, and what a thrill that was!  Both dynamic storytellers, both with some stories to tell.  Here are our interview notes for both.  Cheers

Tom McEvoy

1983 World Champ

www.highrollerradio.net

Alright High Rollers, today a guy who made it to the top in the world of professional poker…the absolute top…our chat today is brought to you our friends at VegasTopDogs.com, America’s #1 Handicappers, they pick winners folks…vergastopdogs.com

Alright…I am so looking forward to this discussion…this guy is the 1983 world champ….first player ever to win the championship after satelliting in…Isn’t that what  Moneymaker did, and Poker exploded?  He’s won 4 bracelets…he was instrumental in bringing fresh air into the poker room, we’ll talk about that. He’s co-authored several books….good ones too…co-authored them with guys like TJ Cloutier, Brad Daughtery and Max Stern…he’s written for Card Player and he reps the online Giant PokerStars….oh, and he is a newly minted member of the Poker Hall of Fame…icing on the cake of a brilliant poker career….

World champ Tom McEvoy is our geust today…What a pleasure, thanks for being a High Roller Tom…

We gotta start with the Hall of Fame, you’re going to be officially inducted November 3rd at the November 9 showdown, talk about pomp and pageantry…Congratulations  man…well-deserved…where does this rank on your list of achievements…

I know you’ve been on the ballot before…this is something you really wanted…and it just wasn’t happening…what was different this year.

So much history in the hall…all the legends…forgive me for saying, but you’re on the of the poker old’timers now….when you were a so-called young gun…who were some of the players you looked up to?

Class of 2013…

Heads-up battle with Rod Peete was the longest in WSOP History for a l;ongtime, finally surpassed by the epic Chip Reese Andy Bloch showdown…can you tell us about your opponent and that battle…

And you satellite’d in….why do you think poker exploded when Moneymaker did essentially the same thing you did…is it simply because you did it live…where as he satellithed in online?

You’ve had some epic heads-up matches and victorious ones too…you beat Peete for the world title…you defeated another world champ Berry Johntson tom win a bracelet in Limit Omaha…and you’re first bracelet in Razz…you’ve got two in razz….but you bested Donacha O’Dea…the Irish legend…those are big names?

Tom…do you feel you get enough credit for your poker accomplishments…I know you’re in the Hall now…but when poker exploded…some others got a lot of limelight…where I feel…you didn’t necessarily get a ton of tv time…relatively speaking, as compared to Hellmuth, Brunson, Matusow, Laak, Esfandiari?

How good did it feel to win the WSOP’s 1st ever  champions invitational….

Big issues facing poker?

Greg Raymer Interview

www.highrollerradio.net

Hey High Rollers,

What a thrill…and I mean that…an absolute thrill…to be speaking with our guest today….can you say world champion?  Today’s interview is brought to by our friends at VegasTopDogs.com, America’s #1 sports handicappers…featuring the like of Tony K and Joe Duffy…they pick winners…at vegastopdogs.com.

I’ll never forget the image…I think it was a delayed reaction, we’re going to ask him about that today…but then the hands raised, a primal scream…joy, elation, relief, probably all rolled into one…because in 2004…this guy…climbed to the top of the poker mountain…a view, by the way, only a very special few get, to win the main event of the World Series of Poker…minted a world champ forever…and a little slice of WSOP immortality…not to mention the money…and it was a good chunk, $5 million….oh, and those glasses….gave poker face a whole new meaning…

I said it off the top…it is a thrill to welcome The Fossilman, Greg Raymer to the show, Greg, welcome, thanks for being a High Roller:

I’ve always wanted to ask you….that final hand against David Williams…your full house, what was it deuces full of 8’s….it seemed to me like you hesitated before raising your arms in victory…not sure if that was the tv edit…but did it take you a moment….to realize you had just won the title?

We just had Pamela Brunson on…I know you know her dad…but have you met her before…

Money, teaching…

Greg, I met you in London England, the Hilton Metrople for the EPT London…we shook hands, I said I was a fan…and you were accommodating, very gracious….does that come natural to you…because…with the title comes exposure, fame…the lot….was it an easy adjustment for you?

I read somewhere that you made a deal with your wife…you’d play on a $1,000 bankroll, if you lost it…you’d quit poker…is that true, and how close did you come to a balance of zero before you hit the jackpot…

I’m sure poker was changing at the time you won won…ho has it changed since…are the kids really that crazy and ultra-aggressive?

What has poker taught you about life…I mean, you travel the world….been to a lot of places, seen a lot of things…

Lot of people know you used to be a patent attorney…not to many, I’m guessing, know you have a Master’s Degree in biochemistry…what kinds of things were you tackling there…and any relatin to poker?

I assume the poker world today, because there’s so much money to be won…is full of very smart people…can you give us an idea…isn’t Chris Binger a rocket scientist or something…you’ve got bankers, stock guys, engineers…it’s a tough racket

Hall of Fame inductions officially take place November 3…Scotty Nguyen, Tom McEvoy, another world champ…your thoughts on the inductees this year….

Is that something you aspire too?

Is there a fraternity of past winners of the main event?

After you win the main event…you finish 25th the next year…what kind of grind was that?  That was quite an accomplishment.

Mike Matusow…that run-in with him…how is your relationship with him now?

World Champs Raymer & McEvoy to Gues on SHOW – YES!

October 22, 2013Hey High Rollers, how great is this?  Not only a sign, an indication, we’re growing our library by two quality – HIGH QUALITY – guests, but we are also GROWING the SITE too.  We are so happy, thrilled actually, to report we have confirmed a couple of world champions for the show.  YES!

Greg ‘The Fossilman’ Raymer and our program director Derrick Oliver-Dewan have been corresponding by email…and it looks like things are set for 2pm EST Wednesday.  Raymer, of course, the 2004 world champ, when he defeated ‘young gun’ David Williams heads up with a full house, deuces full of his pocket eights…Williams held a boat as well…deuces full of his 4’s….$5 million richer for his efforts and a piece of WSOP immortality.  Heard a story that initially, Raymer’s wife wasn’t too happy with his play online so he struck a deal with her…he would play a $1,000 bankroll and should he lose that he would quit poker….the rest, as they say, is history.  Can’t wait to chat with the Fossilman.

I met Greg at the EPT LONDON at the Hilton Metropole, very briefly a few years about and he shook my hand, said hello, graciously accepted my compliments and was very accommodating.  This guy has been GREAT for the game.   Now, we know he’s had some bad press lately, but we will certainly will NOT be broaching that subject, unless he wants to.  Our site is about poker history, legends of the game…which Raymer most certainly is!  Thank-you Greg for agreeing to guest with us.  Oh man, can’t wait.

Also…

1983 woeld champ...newly minted member of the Hall of Fame.

1983 world champ…newly minted member of the Hall of Fame.

How about it…Tom McEvoy, YES!!!!  The 1983 world champ, an author, a gentleman of the game, and now a newly minted Poker Hall of Famer.  A credit well deserved…you know he’s been on the ballot 5 straight years…from Bridesmaid to Bride in ’13.  McEvoy is a 4-time bracelet winner and has always been good for the game,

I met Tom in Montreal, at the Poker Pro Canada Classic, where he played as part of a Deepstacks University Course offered to anyone who would pony up $500.  It was well worth it…you can make that money back in one pot with the information the pros conveyed.  Great stuff.  The course also included Adam Levy, otherwise known as Roothlus online, Michael ‘The Grinder’ Mizrachi, and Tristen Wade, an excellent online sniper.  Tom was absolutely delightful, gracious, kind in his answers…his table manner and his instruction were both inviting…and it was quite interesting to recognize the differences in the two styles of instruction:  Tom more old school…while The Grinder, Levy and Wade represented the new age player…ultra aggressive…get those chips at any cost…fight, fight, fight for each hand.  I am not saying Tom is tight…just that his play is different, for sure.

Tom McEvoy has been great fiends with Kathy Liebert, another former guest and $6 million plus in career earnings, but I’m not sure if they’re close anymore.  I may ask about that?  Here’s the thing…this honour means the world to Mr. McEvoy and he deserves it.  Interesting though, that in past years he was waiting and waiting for the phone call and it HURT him when it never came.  This year…he told me…he just ‘let go’…whatever happens happens…and not two weeks later he got the call….wow!  A lesson there somewhere, right?

Not 1 – but 2 world champs on High Roller Radio in one week.  Thank-you guys.  We are absolutely thrilled….as is The Nation…at 551 and counting.  Congrats, by the way, to Ed Barkhouse, latest winner of a HRR t-shirt….Ed, I need your mailing deets.  LIKE our facebook page to enter:

Gambling Tidbits:

Did you know?  Legendary blackjack player Ken Uston, a member of the Blackjack Hall of Fame, was a video game expert too and penned, in just four days, Mastering PAC-MAN, which hit the New York Times Best Seller list.  He also licensed his name to Coleco for Coleco Vision and published software called, Ken Uston’s Professional Blackjack, for Apple.
Did you know?  Ken Uston, who wrote The Big Play…er, which exposed secrets into Team Play blackjack,  beat the casinos in the courts, which in New Jersey, ruled in his favor against three casinos, stating they could not ban players for simply counting cards.  The casinos fought back with rule changes, like the 10 deck shoes you see now, to increase the house edge.

High Roller Thought of the Day:

What’s worse than never achieving your dream? How about reaching it and then seeing it get taken away?  Setting goals, having dreams… anyone can do these things so it’s not just about knowing what you want, it’s also about wanting what you want badly enough that you’ll hold on to your dreams no matter how hard life mentally beats you down.

Brand NEW:  “in the news…”  – Chris Moorman has scored more than $10 million playing online poker tournaments, the World Series of Poker Europe begins tomorrow, Tony G wants to run for Lithuanian politics, what was high stakes pro Viktor Blom’s week like (it was GOOD) and a bizarre tattoo prop bet for $550k??

My Interview on High Roller Radio

high roller radio

A few days ago I received an e-mail from Derrick Oliver-Dewan.  He’s the founder, director, and on-air personality for a new radio format called High Roller Radio.

Derrick said he wanted to interview me for his show.  I figured we’d discuss the usual topics going on in the poker world.

To my surprise, Derrick went a lot deeper than I expected, and I certainly talked a lot longer than he planned.  A radio show the customarily went 15-20 minutes extended close to an hour, due mostly to me rambling on about Stu Ungar, the World Series of Poker, Poker Night in America, and even some political issues.

Sometime later following our interview, I discovered that Derrick probably was the one who deserved the microphone, for his personal story is far more compelling — and even inspiring — than anything I’ve ever done.  I won’t steal away Derrick’s thunder.  Instead, I’ll let him tell his own incredible story at his own time.  Nonetheless, I expect he will make an excellent feature subject for an upcoming “Facing the Firing Squad.”  So, remember the name Derrick Oliver-Dewan.

In the meantime, here’s the re-broadcast of my interview today with Derrick which took place earlier this afternoon

Again…thank-you Nolan!  very generous indeed. To listen to entire interview http://www.highrollerradio.net/Nolan_Dalla.html

On the topic of Poker Night in America…

Massive Slow Roll:  We’ve mentioned the new show recent guest Nolan Dalla is a part, Poker Night in America?  Well, here is a sample of what you’re going to see on it and it involves a massive slow-roll:

In a recent $25-$50 no-limit hold’em cash game as part of Poker Night in America, poker pros Mike Matusow and Shaun Deeb were tangled up in a pot. Matusow held jacks while Deeb held fives. The flop gave Deeb quads, and when Matusow shoved his short stack in on the turn, Deeb astonishingly asked for a count. He thought about it for a little bit before calling.

(I do NOT advocate slow-rolling opponents, but that must have been funny!)

John McCain likes poker?  A new photo is making the rounds on the internet, showing Senator John McCain, a one-time presidential candidate, playing Texas Hold’em on his IPhone.  This, while the ruling class on Capitol Hill was weighing its …options on war.   The photo was captured by a photographer Melina Mara at The Washington Post.  Despite a storm a criticism, the elected official from Arizona was unapologetic.

LOVE IT!

Nice post from Lori Kolstad, a share of former guest Robert Turner, the inventor of Omaha.

Lori Kolstad
A lil’ poker history via the most informed man in poker, Mr. Robert Turner ~

“I worked for the MGM for five years and in 1999 I had them tour LA to convince them to put poker in the MGM. About four executives toured Los Angeles with me and I had Tom McEvoy give them a book on Poker . After the visit they called to thank me and said poker was not for the MGM all that changed when they realized Bobby Baldwin was about to be their boss.”

Did you know?  Robert Turner invented the game of Omaha.
