‘Casino Jimmy’ Nielson – Commentary

star goal keeper by day, degenerate gambler by night

star goal keeper by day, degenerate gambler by night

By: Derrick Oliver

Intro:  You’ve heard the story all too often…super star athletes getting out of line…drugs, alcohol, and yes, gambling.  Michael Jordan’s been there, John Daly too and even pro poker player Erick Lindgren.  Of course, Stu Ungar was the ultimate junkie, degenerate gambler…an absolute stud at the poker tables but just too many leaks in life.  Problem gamblers…and today, we introduce “Casino Jimmy”…a star goaltender in the Danish Soccer Leagues…a guy, who loved to gamble…and suffered thru ridiculous swings…. Casino Jimmy on High Roller Radio.

Body:  Just read a great article in Bluff magazine on the woes of Erick Lindgren, who’s won millions playing poker, a guy who was receiving massive monthly cheques from Full Tilt Poker pre-Black Friday, a sweet little benefit of part ownership in the once mighty FTP.  Of course, the DOJ stepped in, the cheques stopped, a dry spell in poker and then a horrendous 2011 betting sports and Lindrgen was tapped out…no money…the Bluff front-page article was titled, BROKEN!  Lindgren’s once All American persona, now shattered, blogs, forums and twitter-verse have shattered his image…bad debts, avoiding phone calls…that’s what happen…when you’re addicted.

Meet Casino Jimmy…star goalie in the Danish League, a footballer as they say, who once left his wife and family in the middle of the night for a flight to Vegas, where his cell phone didn’t work, and where he stayed for days.  His family was horrified.  “That’s one of the stories I’m not very proud of,” he says in his new book, Welcome to the Blue Heaven, Don’t Bet Against the Goalkeeper.

Now, the reigning MLS Goal-Keeper of the Year for sporting Kansas City, Nielsen’s details his foray into degenerate gambling, the swings, the highs and lows, the addiction itself is shocking.   Soccer player by day yes, but Casino Jimmy had a second job for 20 years – gambling.  He won $500,000 one night playing roulette, betting 30-grand a spin…can you imagine…half a mill at the roulette table?  Kicker, the casino didn’t have enough money on hand to pay him and when he returned the next day to get it…he lost 350,000 of it back to the casino.

Sports betting…he was Prolific to say the least…multiple times winning 12 team accumulator bets…each paying more than $150,000…interesting thing is….those accumulator bets would include his team….so to avoid having his performance impact his wager, he would bet his team to win, lose and draw on separate tickets.

With the highs come the lows….his friend had to close his corner shop because Casino Jimmy and his partner couldn’t pay a hefty debt…his friend bailing him out…the Danish Media had a field day….Nielson had to sell his house t0 pay off debts, leaving his wife a two kids none too happy…..keep in mind….soccer stars, especially keeper of the years, make good money…gambling took all of it.

It’s a tough addiction to beat…took him three, three stints in rehab before he kicked it…now, his life back…he’s playing well…and he’s helping others.  Don’t Bet against the goalkeeper right?

The Gambler – Kenny Rogers

The Gambler

The Gambler. Kenny won the grammy for Best Male Vocalist in 1980

The Gambler. Kenny won the grammy for Best Male Vocalist in 1980

To say it struck a chord with gamblers all over the world is to understate its simple genius.  What a song!  Kenny Rogers won the Grammy for best male vocalist in 1980 for the song, ‘The Gambler.”   As close to perfect a song will get, it quickly became one of the World’s all-time great anthems.

•          Released – 1978

•          Format – Vinyl

•          Genre – country

•          Label – United Artists

•          Length – 3:32

•          Songwriters: Hart, Lorenz / Rodgers, Richard

Here’s some Lyrics from The Gambler:

He said, “Son, I’ve made my life out of readin’ people’s faces,

And knowin’ what their cards were by the way they held their eyes.

So if you don’t mind my sayin’, I can see you’re out of aces.

For a taste of your whiskey I’ll give you some advice.”

So I handed him my bottle and he drank down my last swallow.

Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light.

And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression.

Said, “If you’re gonna play the game, boy, ya gotta learn to play it right.

You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em,

Know when to walk away and know when to run.

You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table.

There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’s done.

Great song.  To watch the video, visit www.highrollerradio.com and click the “organizations’ tab.

Champagne Please!

Pop the Cork….pop it baby!

You’ve seen it before, happens all the time. The scenario plays out like this: Guys wins a huge pot at poker, then tosses the dealer a buck. Woman splits kings and gets two aces and wins 4 grand. She throws the deal a $1 chip. Players at both tables expect our happy winner to buy a round…they get nothing.  Cheap skates!  These are not high rollers folks. But this guy is…!

Let me introduce you to Don Johnson, a true high roller. Johnson spent 120-thousand pounds, roughly $200 thousand, for one bottle of bubbly. A whopping $200 thousand on one bottle? He chalked up the bill at a swanky nightclub called One For One across the pond, place called Park Lane. Johnson , an American, was visiting his friend, his rock-star pal Bon Jovi.   The night began simple enough – a relatively cheap bottle of Dom Perignon, the Luminous Magnon, 2002, cost him 750 pounds. A bottle Grey Goose was next -another 420 pounds. After 4 complimentary bottles of soda water, Johnson dumped $25,000 on Armand De Brignac Methusela. Not sure if it was that drink or the atmosphere but this is about the point in the evening the big spender in Mr. Johnson came out. Oh yes, seems Donny Boy had recently heard a rumour the club had secretly commissioned the biggest bottle of champagne ever…and he wanted it. The Armand De Brignac Midas. You might call it bank robbing bubbly. Johnson bought it! Ready for this? It was 30 litres large, the size of about 400 regularly-sized 750 bottles. Weighed about 100 pounds.  Johnson sprayed the room and then offered crazed revellers a swig from this juggernaut of a jug.

Tidbit for you…earlier this year, Johnson beat the Tropicana Casino and resort in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for a cool $5.8 million at blackjack.  Also worth noting…seems, Johnson, the ‘Champagne King’, doesn’t even like French sparkling wine. Just a High Roller folks….a good old fashioned High Roller!
