Nolan Dalla – One of a Kind

What a treat!  Nolan Dalla is a legendary figure in the world of poker and he gave us an outstanding 52 minutes on our modest High Roller Radio.  Insightful, historical and philosophical too, Dalla spoke on a wide range of topics; Stu Ungar, his book One of a Kind, his job as media director at the WSOP, his new television show Poker Night in America and much, much more.  What poker books does he like?  What does he think of Phil Hellmuth?  Phil Ivey?  Sunglasses at the poker table?  How about the state of America…yes, he rants about too.  Great stuff Nolan thank-you.  Below, enjoy our interview notes for Nolan Dalla.  (Listen to full interview at www.highrollerradio.net)

Nolan Dalla

– WSOP Media Director, Poker Night in America, Author

Hey High Rollers,

This is going to be a treat, a real treat…I read the book years ago and it remains one of my all-time favorite poker books, One of a Kind, the Stu Ungar biography…outstanding…and our guest today wrote it…

currently, he’s one of the brains behind a new poker television show Poker Night in America, which I applied for by the way, rejected! and he also happens to be the media director for the WSOP, only the biggest poker outfit in the world.

He is a legendary figure in the poker world…a poker historian and ambassador to the game.

I know he likes to banter about politics too, with his political science degree from the University of Texas, he’s got a masters as well..and di some work in the government…we’ll talk about that…maybe we’ll get him to paint us a picture of America right now…in poker and in life.  Nolan Dalla is our guest today…Nolan, the pleasure is ours thanks for being a High Roller man:

Right off the top, I’ve got to say…your book was so much better than the movie High Roller, or Stuey in some places, I’m sure you’ve heard that a lot…it was a wonderful offering…my hat is off to you for that…how did that project come to be?  were you friends with Stu…because let me say, you were able to not only paint a picture of his brilliance with a deck of cards…but also managed to get some candid admissions from him as well…with respect specifically to his drug use and how it affected him as a father…

What did you think of the movie?
<NFL Betting>

Mike Sexton said in the eulogy he wanted people to remember Stu for his greatest at the table and not his troubles off it….always wanted to ask you…should we do that….should we simply forget the degenerate he was was…and simply hold him us as maybe the greatest ever?

Here are my top 3 poker books…One of a Kind, by you, The Professor, The Banker and the Suicide King by Michael Craig and Mr. McManuses Positively Fifth Street….you friends with those guys, what did you think of those two books?

I do want to talk about the World Series of Poker….but first, Poker Night in America….tell us about it, it’s new, it sounds exciting…

On the phone with Nolan Dalla…poker ambassador of all poker ambassadors….Nolan you’ve got one of the greatest jobs in the world…when someone wins a bracelet, you are the first to greet them and say well-done…that’s got to be highly rewarding, especially on those days someone wins WSOP gold for the first time…

Can you walk us through your role with the WSOP?

So many great stories from this past summer at the RIO…Canadian Invasion….Negreanu fighting for Player of the Year…two women winning open events…Barny Boatmen capturing his first, Johnny Bax, the legendary Cliff Josephy winning #2, , Mike Matusow getting number 4…what stood out for you, Doyle Brunson running deep in  the main?  What were your highlights?

Please keep up the broadcasts online, the final tables…poker junkies like me…we love that…gets better each year….do you like jumping in the broadcast booth?  David Tuchman phenomenal…

POY race…Greg Mueller was on our show…ranting about the fact that Kid Poker was already 400 some odd points ahead of him in POY race before he even stepped in the RIO…suggesting perhaps…it should start in vegas…and then, anyone having a good summer could then travel the world and vy for that prestigious award…

Player of the year and the world champion…forever immortalized on the walls at the RIO…very nice touch..

November 9…any predictions on atmosphere or winner?

How has the absence of online poker in America affected the WSOP?  Where are we with regulating things?

Political science guy….what is going on in America right now…your chance to rant about what you see as right and wrong with the Nation…I’m in Canada…but I am interested to hear what you think of the state of the union if you will…

Rapid Fire:

Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, Antonio Esfandiari, Doyle Brunson, Tom Dwan, Vanessa Selbst,Daniel Negreanu the new age player versus the veteran old-timer, sunglasses at the poker table, a shot clock in poker, Black Friday, today’s interviewer?

Did you know?  In addition to a long list of poker and gambling articles published in Gambling Times, Card Player, Poker Digest, Poker Pages, Poker Player, and The Intelligent Gambler, Nolan Dalla is the author of One of a Kind, Stu Ungar’s biography.

Thank-you Nolan.

Did you know?  As media director for the WSOP, Nolan Dalla, author of the legendary One of a Kind, the biography of Stu Ungar,  has been at every bracelet ceremony at the WSOP since 2002.

Daniel Negreanu Controversy

Daniel Negreanu Controversy

What do you think?  Should Daniel Negreanu‘s hand have been ruled dead?  He was so mad he quit the tourney.  Wow, imagine being able to just quit a 10k tourney in protest…he has won more than $17 million lifetime.

Essentially, Negreanu, as he often is, was away from his seat as the dealer began to deal the cards and because of a new Tournament Directors Association rule, the fist card off the deck rule, Kid Poker’s hand was declared instantly dead by the dealer.  And it was upheld by the TD!  Daniel was so upset he went all-in blind the very next hand and was eliminated.  He says its bad for the player on a customer service level, I mean, after all, he did pay 10k to play.  He was probably over talking to the crowd or something, signing an autograph maybe…important to note…Daniel was back to his seat by the time his second card arrive, in the small blind…he wasn’t far from his seat, he just wasn’t in it.  Wow.  I agree with Daniel…you?

Did you know?  IN Russia, there are 4 legal casino zones in the country. A nationwide embargo on casinos was imposed in 2009.  Now, NagaCorp, a casino operator in Cambodia, says it will spend $350 million for its new Russia casino, an attractive location because of its close proximity to China.  Chinese gamblers have fueled Macau’s rise to the top gambling market in the world. The former Portuguese colony is going to reap more than $40 billion in gaming revenue this year. For comparison, Nevada should bring in around $11 billion this year

Did you know?  Live poker in Nevada brought in $123,253,000 in 2012, which was a 6.54-percent decline from 2011.  It was the smallest amount since 2004, according to research from the University of Nevada Las Vegas.  Nevada Poker revenues have been declining since 2008.  Other poker room closings in recent years include the Gold Coast, Tuscany and Fitzgerald’s (re-branded as “The D”).

NEW COVER: The Broadcasters!  Tony Dunst, poker pro, broadcaster with the WPT and star of new documentary Bet Raise Fold: The Story of Online Poker & David Tuchman, the workhorse who does play-by-play for all WSOP final tables live streamed… to the world.  Great archived line-up!
Did you know?  Tony Dunst had $27,000 in his account when the Justice Department swung the axe at online poker.  Ouch.  He was “pissed” to say the least.

One from the archives…but a good one:  David Tuchman, play-by-play man for all the LIVE streamed final tables at the WSOP and a guy who made a very deep run in the main event.
Did you know?  Tuchman has also commentated on Nascar and sideline reported for College Football on Fox.

Keys to Success in 7-Card Stud

Hand selection – be very strict and disciplined in selecting what hands you play in this game.  Patience is a virtue but it is also a money-maker!

Discipline – tight is right!  You don’t want to be chasing with the 2nd best hand.

• Reading your Opponent – the ability to read opponents is crucial in 7-Card Stud.  Never wqaste time at the table; when you’re not in a hand be vigilant about watching your opponents.

• Memory – you MUST remember all of the other players’ up cards.  This will help you make decisions on later streets.

7-Card Stud vs. Texas Hold’em

The differences between 7-Card Stud and Texas Hold’em are not subtle.  They are quite obvious once you sit down at the table:

• There are no community cards.

• Ante and a bring-in bets are used instead of blinds.

• There are five betting rounds as compared to four in Hold’em.

• The player who has the best starting hand starts the action on every betting round, except for the first round of betting, when the lowest up card begins with the ‘Brinmg In.’

• You must remember the folded up cards.

• The number of players is limited to a maximum of eight.

• There is no positional advantage before the cards are dealt. The cards determine who acts first and last on every betting round.

•There is no dealer button, as every hand is dealt in the same order starting at the dealer’s immediate left.

Structure and Antes

• All players receive two cards dealt face down (hole cards) and one card dealt face up (up card). The cards are dealt one at a time.

• The player with the lowest up card has to make a ‘set’ bring-in bet.

• The betting continues clockwise with the player to the left of the bring-in bet.

• A fourth card is dealt face up. The action begins with the player holding the best up cards and continues clockwise.

• A fifth card is dealt face up. The action begins with the player holding the best up cards and continues clockwise.

• A sixth card is dealt face up. The action begins with the player holding the best up cards and continues clockwise.

• A seventh card is dealt face down. The action begins with the player holding the best up cards and continues clockwise.

• All remaining players make out the best possible five-card poker hand.

Most Common Betting Structure in 7-Card Stud:

Limit/Ante/ Bring/Opening Bet

Tips & Advice

• Choose the correct starting hand given the situation.

• Play the player!  Who plays what and how often? Who can be bluffed?  Who’s aggressive?

• Pump it or dump it!  Fold or raise, it’s your best bet in this poker variation.  Calling should be saved for special occasions, like when you’re trapping an opponent.

• Remember the up card!  Again, we can’t stress this enough.  Pay attention and study your opponents’ up cards and remember them.   For instance, if you are on a straight draw it is important to remember if your ‘Gin’ cards are still out there.

• Raise with your strong draws; betting on the come is even more valuable in Stud than in Hold’em.

World Champ and all the money!

World Champ and all the money!

WOW!!!  Jamie Gold’s main event bracelet from his 2006 World Series of Poker championship has sold for a whopping $65,725 in an online auction.  It’s a stunning piece of jewelry containing more than seven carats of diamonds and 120 grams of white and yellow gold. Why would sell such a momento?  “It’s a legal issue that I can’t talk about, but what I can say is that I am not selling it,” he… said. “I would never do that. It’s really unfortunate what has been happening. It is out of my hands, but it’s not something I wish was happening. I’m not purposefully selling; I’m not involved in the auction and will not be making $1 if it does end up being sold,” the world champion told Card Player magazine when the bracelet went up for auction. Gold won the bracelet after defeating a field of 8,773 in the 2006 main event. He cashed for $12 million in that tournament, but has cashed for less than $150,000 in live tournaments since. Other poker players who have sold their bracelets include Brad Daugherty, Eskimo Clark, T.J. Cloutier and 2008 main event champ Peter Eastgate.   Eastgate’s was sold for charity, however.

<Free Picks and Analysis>

Of course, Jamie Gold is one of the most enigmatic characters in the world of poker.  He absolutely dominated, I mean DOMINATED, the 2006 main event, holding the chip lead since, I believe, Day 3.  He told the truth and they just didn’t believe him…it was amazing really.  He won $12 million for the feat but, because of a legal dispute with a former buddy, had to forfeit half the total.  The story goes he was contracted by Bodog to entice some celebrities to wear Bodog gear and in return the online site would pay his entry into the main event.  Gold is a talent agent in Hollywood remember, in fact some people think the character Ari Gold in the series Entourage is loosely based on him, and the job seemed simple enough.  Problem was, Gold couldn’t be bothered so he asked a friend of his, one of his helpers, to do the job and in return he’d get half of Gold’s winnings.  I can see it.  I mean, the main event attracted more than 7,000 runners that year so the odds of winning it were minute.  As the tourney wore on, and Gold continued to hold the chip lead, his friend became anxious and bothered Gold, “Don’t forget our deal,” and so on.  Gold finally called him, during his fantastic run, and left a message saying, to the effect, “Don’t worry bud, our deal is good, just let me focus on playing poker right now.”  It is now known as the $6 million voicemail.  After his win Harrah’s held 1/2 the first prize in its vault until the legal dispute was resolved.  No word on the exact amount Gold’s buddy eventually received but it’s believed to be half the first place prize.

44th Annual World Series of Poker

Hey High Rollers, the main event of the 44th annual World Series of Poker is chugging along, Day(s) 1A) B) & C) are in the books now and check it out, my buddy Mark Kroon has the chip lead!!! YES!  Kroon, AKA the ‘PokerHo’ is a former sponsored pro at Ultimate Bet.  We met at a tourney I organized at Four Aces Poker Club in Montreal, at the time, it was the largest ever event in Quebec with a $1500 buy-in or higher…that is, until the WPT came into Playground Poker.

Kroon is a large guy, very loud, and funny… usually he’s the centre of attention, in a good way, and he’s close friends with Phil Hellmuth, in fact Kroon was on the ESPN show, that starred Hellmuth and Annie Duke…the name escapes me…but it was pretty good.  Kroon owns a bar in Madison, Wisconsin and hosts his own radio show in the Badger state.  246,000 in chips after eliminating Ylon Schwartz on the final hand of Day 1 C)…Schwartz a former November 9’er.

Check out all updates on our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/HighRollerRadio?ref=hl “LIKE” us and you’ll be entered into our July 15th draw.

Did you know?  The 1973 was the first modern World Series of Poker as we know it today.  A series of new games was added to the schedule; 7 Card Stud, Razz, Ace to 5 lowball, Deuce to 7 lowball, 5 Card Stud and a few smaller No-Limit Hold’em events, all of which led up to the main  event, referred to as the world championship.  Organizers were coming off the public relations bonanza that followed Amarillo Slim’s victory the year before, which provided some well-received national attention and spotlight on poker’s world championship.

Hey High Rollers,

Here is another submission from Mild to Wild Bird, a proud member of High Roller Nation on facebook.  We certainly appreciate it.  We are open to all submissions, got something to say?  Talk to us on facebook or twitter @highrollerradio

Types of Poker Players

Action Types:

Green Fish – Play good hands against this opponent, be aggra, tantalize and bluff a little.

Calling Station – Play OK, decent hands against this person, value bet them all the way to the river and never bluff!

Red Fish and Warning – Play very good starting hands against these opponents if they are betting post flop.  Generally, though, raise ’em on the flop and watch ’em fold !

Bomb – Do not bluff this player!  Make sure you’ve got a good hand and tantalize them with small bets; check raise a little and try to have position on them

Solid Types:

MOUSE – Be very aggressive and loose versus this type.  You’ll win all the small pots.

ROCK – In position, be aggressive and bluff on occasion but if he/she’s betting – WATCH OUT!

SHARK – In position, play Very good hands ONLY!  They’ve usually got it.

Thanks again to Mild to Wild Bird for these great tips.  If you want to reach me by email  derrick@highrollerradio.net

Greatest Bookie Ever? Sonny Reisner

Sonny Reisner put up odds on who shot J.R. from the hit series Dallas

Sonny Reisner put up odds on who shot J.R. from the hit series Dallas

The Greatest Bookie Ever?

Sonny Reizner, who some consider the greatest bookie ever, is the man most often given credit to starting the proposition betting craze in Las Vegas.  Flashback to 1980, sports books are just emerging as respectable institutions, Reisner, who ran a small hole-in-the-wall betting joint called the Castaways, was able to grab international headlines by hanging odds on who shot J.R.

The television drama Dallas was the number 1 show back in ’80, it had huge ratings, and Reisner was able to capitalize on its popularity by placing the odds.  He even listed Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry and quarterback Roger Staubach as two suspects.  J.R., an evil oil baron, had been gunned down and America seemed entranced in the ongoing whodunit.  People flocked into the Castaways to place bets.  State gaming officials were not impressed and forced Reisner to take the bet off the books and eventually passed a law where proposition bets could only be made on sporting events.

Reisner was quite a bookmaker, an original who was the first to offer large point spreads on football games, the first to offer special Super Bowl and Monday night parlays and the first to accommodate the media.  He was ahead of his time.   Sonny Reisner died of Parkinson’s in 1981.

Tidbit:  Reisner had a sense of humor too; once when asked about his time in the military, he said, “when I went into the service the Germans became 8-to-5 favorites.”

Did you know? Reisner readily admitted his gambling career began in the bleachers of Fenway Park in the 1930s.

Tidbit #2:  A bet on Kristen Sheppard would have won the J.R. bet; she was his sister-in-law and ex-lover.
