Padraig Parkinson Q&A, Ultimate Slow Roll, Poker Funnies & the HRR T-Shirt

Hey High Rollers, great interview with Irish legend Padraig Parkinson today, well actually at midnight last night our time, 6 a.m. his time in Paris, but edited today and on the website now at www.highrollerradio.net (give it a few minutes to load.) Padraig was 3rd at the 1999 main event, won Late Night Poker across the pond, which made him a household name in the UK, and he’s got a new book out, Rebel Without a Pause, and believe me you’ll want to pick yourself up a copy. He is a funny guy and dynamic storyteller; we spoke about the passing of Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliot, the Irish Open and that classic slow roll gone wrong. What was the German thinking? Slow rolling the Grandfather of Irish Poker Donnacha O’Dea, at the final table no less. He got what he deserved.  If you haven’t seen it yet, here is the commentators reaction, obviously Irish and fans of O’Dea:

Crazy! “Justice is done! Justice is done.!” Padraig has heard one possible reason for the slow roll, but you have to listen to the interview, Part 2, at www.highrollerradio.net

Luck of the Irish?

Stable boy turned millionaire.  In March 2012, 29-year-old Irishman Conor Murphy placed the luckiest bet of his life at Cheltenham.  He wagered $75 on all five of his boss’s horses to win and, guess what, they did.  Murphy scooped a stunning pot of $1.5 million in the accumulator.

Longest of Longshots

The 1913 Kentucky Derby produced the longest long-shots in the history of the race when 91-to-1 outsider Donerail claimed victory.   One hundred years ago, those putting $2 on Donerail would have collected $184.90.

Incredible!  Jockey Frankie Dettori left bookmakers with their jaws dropped in 1996 when he won all seven races at the Ascot Festival in the United Kingdom at odds of 25,000-to-1.  Darren Yeats placed a £59 ($89) accumulator bet on all of Dettori’s races and it paid off, big time.  Yeats took home £550,000 ($830,000) richer.

Scotty Nguyen Baby! (Pronounced ‘winn’)

•  5 WSOP bracelets
•  1998 World Champ
•  1 World Poker Tour title
•  8 final tables on the WPT

Did you know?

Mike ‘The Mouth’ Matusow, one of the best players on the planet, wrote in his book, Check Raising the Devil, that a few days before the 1998 Main Event had a dream, which vividly depicted Scotty Nguyen as the Champion.  Despite his friends and mother’s objection, Matusow decided to opt out of the tournament and instead give his entry fee to Scotty for 33 per cent of any prize money.  One week later, Nguyen became World Champion and ‘The Mouth’ was $333,333 richer – his share of the $1 million payday.

Tidbit:  One day after the 1998 World Championship, Scotty Nguyen’s brother was killed in a car accident back home in Vietnam.  To this day, Nguyen does not wear his Main Event gold bracelet.

A Putt for his Life?

Once, during a discussion about golf, Doyle Brunson said that if he had to pick one guy to make a 10-foot putt for his life it would be Puggy Pearson.  Wow.  Not Nicklaus, nor Palmer, nor Watson.  Puggy Pearson! “He’s the greatest pressure putter I’ve ever seen,” Brunson said.

Akio Kashiwagi

Biggest Gambler in the World? At one time, in 1992, yes he was! This Japanese property developer liked to play baccarat and holds the world record for the biggest loss EVER playing that game – a whopping $10 million in one session at the Trump Casino.  Soon afterwards, he was stabbed to death outside his home.
