Phil Ivey vs Borgata

Can you say Countersuit?

Phil Ivey countersues the Borgata Hotel & Casino over the controversial $9.6 million ‘edge sorting’ case, suggesting the casino committed fraud against them because they destroyed the playing cards/evidence in question. Below is a statement form Ivey’s legal team:
(NOTE: Everything centres on faulty playing cards.)

“Plaintiff’s complaint is barred because of the plaintiff’s own spoliation of evidence, specifically plaintiff’s failure to preserve, sequester or in any other way produce the actual playing cards used in the course of the defendants’ play, thereby irretrievably prejudicing defendants’ ability to secure judgment, and otherwise constituting suppression of evidence that would result in the entry of judgment on behalf of the defendants…Plaintiff intentionally destroyed each and every card and deck of cards it produced for play to defendants Ivey and Sun for that entire five month period preceding defendants’ final play at the Borgata in October of 2012.”

“In the casino, the cardinal rule is to keep them playing and to keep them coming back. The longer they play, the more they lose, and in the end, we get it all.”
– Ace RothsteinCasino

“In Vegas, everybody’s gotta watch everybody else. Since the players are looking to beat the casino, the dealers are watching the players. The box men are watching the dealers. The floor men are watching the box men. The pit bosses are watching the floor men. The shift bosses are watching the pit bosses. The casino manager is watching the shift bosses. I’m watching the casino manager. And the eye-in-the-sky is watching us all.”

Ace Rothstein: (voice-over), Casino

At the movies…
A collection of great poker and gambling films.

“I hadn’t been in Vegas 20 minutes when I got word the bookmakers were offering 3-to-1 that Frank wouldn’t show for my wedding.”
– Sammy Davis Jr.

“Las Vegas is sort of like how God would do it if he had money.”
– Steve Wynn

You can lead a horse to water but a donkey will follow you all the way to the river.

“Every time I go to Vegas, I seem to incur some kind of fine.”
– Artie Lange

In a bet there is a fool and a thief.
~Proverb

“The night before I left Las Vegas I walked out in the desert to look at the moon. There was a jeweled city on the horizon, spires rising in the night, but the jewels were diadems of electric and the spires were the neon of signs ten stories high.”
 Norman Mailer

“In Vegas, I got into a long argument with the man at the roulette wheel over what I considered to be an odd number.”
– Steven Wright

Hockey in Vegas?
“I just don’t see it not happening. We have a solid owner, an arena and we sold 13,000 season tickets. Vegas has 2.2 million people. It’s a sports town. We’ve been starving for a professional franchise of any kind for many years.”
– Daniel Negreanu, on Las Vegas getting an NHL team.

Freeroller to High Roller

“I started playing poker seriously during my sophomore year of college in 2005. I had played some $5 home games in high school and stuff before that, but it was mainly an excuse to drink in our basements. I had kind of forgotten about poker, to be honest, but my little brother was really into it. He’s five years younger than me, and one day when I came back to visit from college, he was in the play money games on PokerStars. I thought it looked fun, so I started playing too. Then I found out about all of the freerolls they had on some of the other sites, won one of them, and all of a sudden I had a $100 bankroll. It was pretty much a standard poker boom story. I read some strategy books, got better and started building up my bankroll. I never had to make a deposit and I never went broke. By the time I had reached my senior year I was doing really well. During the last week of my finals, I had won over six figures.”

– Amit Makhija

Poker Hall of Fame
What’s the Criteria for Entry?

Inductees must be at least 40 years old and must have “played poker against acknowledged top competition” and “for high stakes,” while playing “consistently well” and “gaining the respect of peers.” The player must have lasted in the poker world too, as another standard is that they “stood the test of time.” For those who didn’t more or less play full-time, they must have “contributed to the overall growth and success of the game of poker, with indelible positive and lasting results.”

Did you know? There are currently 48 members of the Poker Hall of Fame.

Poker Quotes

“The first time I walked into Binion’s in 2003, I took one look around the room at the cast of characters and realized this job was going to be everything I’d ever dreamt of,. I swear, I asked myself, ‘Where has this been all my life?’ Then, after I watched the first show before it aired, I was so impressed at the gritty, real-life gambling feel these new producers had given it, it was just unbelievable.”

Norman Chad on living the poker dream.

German Pro Marquis Gruissem on Charity

“After I had player poker nonstop for four or five years I got the point where my motivation got lost and it got boring. I thought, ‘Why am I doing this? I have a little bit of money in the bank, but why else am I doing this?’ That sucks. So I was thinking about what to do and I decided that I should try to be an effective altruist, somebody who thinks how he can help other people most effectively. I came to the conclusion that the thing I could do best right now is playing poker, that’s my skill. So if I give a 10 percent piece of my earnings to charity, the better I play the more money I can make and the more impact I can have. So that is a big motivation for me, when playing poker isn’t always fun, I get back on track and stay motivated through that.”

Duhamel and PokerStars Part Ways

2010 world champion Jonathan Duhamel is no longer a sponsored team pro at PokerStars, the website announcing in April, 2015. The Canadian’s departure follows 2009 world champ Joe Cada being cut from the roster in 2014, and is just another in a long list of pros leaving the site. Can you say ‘Black Friday’? Since the US justice Department cracked down on online gaming in April, 2011, poker advertising dollars have vanished leading to a severe drop in poker television.

Erick Lindgren is being Sued

Yes, in federal court for $2.5 million. The debt dates back to Lindgren’s days as a Full Tilt Poker sponsored player when the company. PokerStars has since acquired FTP and its assets. Most of the $2.5 million comes from FTP erroneously wiring an extra $2 million into Lindgren’s bank account, on top of the $2 million he was taking as compensation from the company. The rest comes in the form of a loan to Lindgren.

Brad Pitt Freeroll

The actor hosted a very short poker game where he gave his chauffeur, and others, a $25,000 freeroll. If Pitt lost, he would fork over $25,000 to the winner, but if he won, he could make his opponents perform a task of his choosing. Seems they were playing flips, which involves everyone being dealt two cards and then just running out the flop, turn and river without any betting.
After the hand played out, Pitt “shrugged his shoulders and mucked his hand.” His driver won. It’s believed Pitt didn’t even bother seeing if he had won.

Phil Ivey is Good, Right?

The American poker superstar has won his 3rd Aussie Millions Super High Roller event in four years. Wow. Ivey wins $2.2 million AUD, ($1,713,285 USD), records his 26th tournament title, and pushes his career earnings to a whopping $22.7 million.

Did you know? Ivey’s top three poker tournament paydays have now all come from wins in this event, with over $7.3 million in earnings coming from his 2012, 2014 and 2015 title runs.

Poker Quotes

“It’s hard work, gambling. Playing poker. Don’t let anyone tell you different. Think about what it’s like sitting at a poker table with people whose only goal is to cut your throat, take your money and leave you out the back talking to yourself about what went wrong inside. That probably sounds harsh. But that’s the way it is at the poker table. If you don’t believe me, then you’re the lamb that’s going off to the slaughter.”

– Stu Ungar

“You can’t let it get you down when somebody knocks you out of a tournament playing a hand they shouldn’t have played. Without these types of players, nobody would win any amount of money, so sometimes you just have to take your medicine.”

– TJ Cloutier

“No Limit Hold’em. Hours of boredom followed by moments of sheer terror.”

– Tom McEvoy

Dr. Robert Chase: “Gambling doesn’t take away his pain.”
Dr. Gregory House: “It does if I win.”

– House

“I believe in poker the way I believe in the American Dream. Poker is good for you. It enriches the soul, sharpens the intellect, heals the spirit, and — when played well, nourishes the wallet.”

– Lou Krieger

“Poker is the game closest to the western conception of life, where life and thought are recognized as intimately combined, where free will prevails over philosophies of fate or of chance, where men are considered moral agents and where — at least in the short run — the important thing is not what happens but what people think happens.”

– John Luckacs

“Is it a reasonable thing, I ask you, for a grown man to run about and hit a ball? Poker’s the only game fit for a grown man. Then, your hand is against every man’s, and every man’s is against yours. Teamwork? Who ever made a fortune by teamwork? There’s only one way to make a fortune, and that’s to down the fellow who’s up against you.”

– W. Somerset Maugham

“The poker player learns that sometimes both science and common sense are wrong; that the bumblebee can fly; that, perhaps, one should never trust an expert; that there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of by those with an academic bent.”

– David Mamet

“Hold’em — like life itself — has its defining moment. It’s the flop. When you see the flop, you’re looking at 71 percent of your hand, and the cost is only a single round of betting.”

– Lou Krieger

“I’ve often thought, if I got really hungry for a good milk shake, how much would I pay for one? People will pay a hundred dollars for a bottle of wine; to me that’s not worth it. But I’m not going to say it is foolish or wrong to spend that kind of money, if that’s what you want. So if a guy wants to bet twenty or thirty thousand dollars in a poker game, that is his privilege.”

– Jack Binion

“Industry executives and analysts often mistakenly talk about strategy as if it were some kind of chess match. But in chess, you have just two opponents, each with identical resources, and with luck playing a minimal role. The real world is much more like a poker game, with multiple players trying to make the best of whatever hand fortune has dealt them. In our industry, Bill Gates owns the table until someone proves otherwise.”

– David Moschella

“A Smith & Wesson beats four aces.”

– American Proverb

“God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of his own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players [i.e., everybody], to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won’t tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.”

– Terry Pratchett and Nei Gaiham, Good Omens, 1991

“Comedy isn’t necessarily all dialogue. Think of Buster Keaton: the poker face and all this chaos going on all around him. Sometimes it’s a question of timing, of the proper rhythm.”

– Clint Eastwood

Isa Summers was very attractive and not your everyday casino cheat.  In the 1960’s and 70’s she reeled in tens of thousands of dollars using shiftiness and smarts; her specialities were ‘hand mucking’ and switching in ‘coolers’ at the blackjack table.

Gambling Joke
Two bored dealers are waiting around for someone to walk up and try their luck at the craps table. A very attractive lady comes in and wants to bet twenty-thousand dollars on a single roll of the dice. The dealers agree. She says, “I hope you don’t mind, but I feel much luckier when I’m half naked.” With that she strips naked from the waist down, and rolls the dice while yelling, “Momma needs a new pair of pants!” She then begins jumping up and down and hugging each of the dealers.
“YES! I WIN! I WIN!” With that she picks up her money and clothes and quickly leaves. The dealers just stare at each other dumbfounded. Finally one of them asks, “What did she roll anyway?” The other answers, “I don’t know. I thought YOU were watching the dice!”

Jeopardy Champ a Student of Game Theory

Jeopardy/Game Theory Expert
Arthur Chu, a 30-year-old voice actor, won more than $100,000 in four appearances on the CBS game show Jeopardy.  Chu actively sought out Daily Double’s and abandoned conventional play by starting with the larger dollar values and working his way ‘up’ the board instead of the lowly $100 categories.  Some fans of the show were offended by his style while others praised his apparent understanding of Game Theory and concepts often employed in poker.  Here’s what this trivia whiz had to say about his approach:

“Back ion the day everybody kept their money.  It was like a cash game in poker. Once you’ve gotten enough money, why risk more money? Why make a big bet? If I know I’ve got $18,000 in the bank and someone’s like, “Hey, want to bet $8,000 that you know the answer to this question?” No. Why would I do that? Am I a gambling addict? Am I stupid?  In order to encourage big bets, Jeopardy! is now winner-take-all. Only the person in first place keeps their total at the end of the game. Everyone else gets the consolation prize. If you have $20,000 and someone else has $20,001, you get second prize, which is $2,000. If you are in third place and the two other players have $5 more than you, no matter how much money you have, you take home $1,000. There’s a very powerful incentive to be aggressive. You really do need to make sure you win the game. The most important thing isn’t the absolute number of dollars you have on the board. It’s how strongly you’re beating the other players. How far ahead are you? What’s the spread?”

“Sports betting is all about money management, so the most money won on one event is not the most important thing.”
— Bruce Dern

Philip Gruissem
Young German Pro won $4.5 million in 2013 and here he talks about one of his main motivations of late – CHARITY:

“In the game of life, the house edge is called time. In whatever we do, nature charges us for doing it in the currency of time. So we must take advantage of every moment. Every moment in life is so very precious.  You only get a fling at life for a while, then the house collects. We must get all our thrills and all our experiences while we have the opportunity. We have to go for it now! And only by taking advantage of time in this way can we get the best of it – win or lose.”
